I don't have any idea offhand of how to find out where John Prezip came from in Portugal, nor how he got to america. Maybe as a hand on a fishing boat. And just because he was "Portuguese" doesn't mean he was born there, just that that was his ancestry. He could have been born in the US or the Caribbean or even the Azores or other islands where Portuguese settled. New Bedford, MA, had a large Portuguese population, and was a fishing/whaling port of great renown.
I'm not related to the Prezips. I know the name because my Goshen ancestor eventually owned the land where Prezip lived. The cellar hole is about a quarter mile south of where our farmhouse is. The pasture where I helped my uncles gather hay is still called the Prezip/Perzip lot. I'll keep an eye out the next time I am at the deed registry.
I wonder if the census recs from 1860 onward for any of his children would give any info. One column is for the father's birthplace. I don't have any family record of his offspring, so I wouldn't know who to look for. If you do, let me know and I'll search on Ancestry, unless you can do it.
The name spelling of Pursip comes from the online index of Massachusetts vital records:
Last name, First name, Location Year Vol, Page, Type
Pursip, Sarah L., Hinsdale, 1843-44, 8, 20, Death
It may be a typo or mistranscription, since the Hinsdale Vital Records give the following:
PERSIP, Sarah L., ––– ––, 1843. [death]
