It does not surprise me at all. Most of the family trees and personal genealogical sites online have been built by people who have done little to no true research, but merely repeat what they have read in old books or elsewhere online.
I have no idea where "Thomas" b. 1743 came from. I do not see him in the published Braintree town records, and I do not see him in Sprague's "Braintree Families."
