I was a resident of St.Mary's Industrial School in Baltimore, MD from Jan.,1947 until it closed on July 15, 1950. I spent my
entire time in dormitory #2 for boys 8-12. Dorm #3 was for 13-16 yr old and Dorm # 4 for 17-21 yr old. Contrary to other post on this site and on the net. There were no way word boys there.Awakened at 6AM out of our beds, kneeling on the floor for 15 minutes of prayer, striping off our pj's and down to the showers. dressed in cordury nickers, no socks, heavy blue denim long sleeve shirts, All of the dormitories assembled outside to march to chapel singing a latin hymn. After chapel, breakfast, then school or work for the older boys.At noon PT, then prayer then school till
5PM, we sang latin hymns while the brothers ate. Then we ate.PT until 7Pm,meditation, then before bed-punishments if
called for -assembled walked to a upright timber,. get 10 or more lashes from the dorm Brother and 5 more if you cried out.We did not have any idle time, every one had to learn basic industrial art: wood working, metal working, grounds keeping, working in the schools laundry, sewing/garment shop. Traveling across the USA for my employer in differnt airport terminals ,Sometimes I would
get a prolonged stare and whistle a few bars from a Te Deum would be enough to open the flood gates of love. As the shadows lengthen we are few in number and when it's time to cross the river, it would be comfortable not to be alone.
