Classification: Query
Surnames: Aymond/Raymond/Hammond, Bartles, Coffey/Coffee/Coffy/Kaufey, Keller
What is her confirmed death date and location? What is her confirmed birth location? What is the daughters name and birthdate who is mentioned in the 1870 US Census, can we determine who the birth father is?
During her lifetime her race is listed as White, Mulatto, and Black on a variety of records.
When searching the census records of her children, parentage was always stated as “Unknown/Don’t Know.” Her name was not discovered until her name was listed on the death certificates of her children. This obfuscation of information was probably due to her race and how it might impair the children’s current social standing. Her son became a medical director of New Orleans’s Medical Center.
Her parents are John Henry Keller of Missouri or Louisiana 1810-? and Mrs. Catherine Keller, a free woman of color, born in Virginia or Louisiana 1819- [Probable February 1901]. There household was a plantation in Plaquemine, Iberville, Louisianna and two this family were born at least eighteen children.
Three marriages listed in Avoyelles Book of Brides: Often the married names are used out of what we might consider appropriate time sequence. This may have been to gather pensions and/or enable survival in some manner.
Marriage One:
Joseph William Aymond Sr. of Avoyelles, Louisiana 1834-16 November 1866 who died in Avoyelles, Avoyelles, Louisiana. Marriage date: 8 April 1958 in Avoyelles, Avoyelles, Louisiana. Upon his death her two sons went with the Joseph William Aymond’s extended family.
Two Children: William Sydney Aymond, Jr 1860-? and Joseph William Aymond 15 July 1862-23 April 1936.
Marriage Two:
John H Bartles birth and death unknown. Marriage Date: 20 December 1867 in Avoyelles, Avoyelles, Louisiana, USA
Sarah Elvira Keller in 1870 as a single white woman household with young daughter age one named Adeline Raymond. This daughter may have been from marriage with Bartles. She is the only white family listed on the census page with all of her neighbors identified as Black.
Marriage Three:
William Coffey of Ireland 17 May 1836 arrived in the United States on the 15 May 1851. Death date unknown. Marriage date: 14 October 1875 Avoyelles, Avoyelles, Louisiana, USA
Two Children: William Edwin Coffey of Evergreen, Louisiana, USA 26 November 1876-25 September 1945 in Shreveport, Caddo, Louisiana, USA. Adolia Rosetta Coffey of Evergreen or Avoyelles, Louisiana, USA December 1878-about 1913 Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA.
