One of my husband's ancestors was a man named Antonio Mendez. He was a high ranking spanish official who lived in St. Bernard parish and was actually the first person to refine sugar from cane. He used Canary Islanders to help him. Gov. Claiborne wanted to appoint him Justice of the Peace and the Canary Islanders of St. Bernard Parish protested saying her was actually Jewish. He had a certificate of racial purity issued to prove that he was not jewish. In researching this, I discovered that there was a well known marano from Spain named Antonio Mendez and that Mendez was a common name from maranos to take after their forced conversion. It's an interesting idea that the Canary Islanders were maranos and then accused this man of being Jewish. The discussion is fascinating and there were probably more marano jews living in Louisiana from Spain than we'll ever know.
