This information comes from two sources: "Kentucky Confederate Pension Applications, 1912-1950 ." Images. FamilySearch. : accessed 2014 and Confederate Pension Board, Kentucky Historical Society, Frankfort, KY.

While I was recently researching at both the Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives and the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort, KY, I came across the following information. I was searching primarily for information for the counties in South Central Kentucky but decided to copy all the information for the entire state.

If you find someone of interest, you can go to (a free service) and find the actual application on each one of these men. Most applications contain the following information:

Application number, Full name of widow of the applicant, residence, length of residence in Kentucky, birth date and place, maiden name of widow, full name of soldier, who performed the marriage (sometimes a copy of the marriage certificate or license may be attached), enlistment date, Company and Regiment, length of service, when and where did the company and regiment surrender, if the soldier was present at time of surrender or if not, the reason why, death date and place of soldier, if the couple was living together at the time of the soldier’s death, second marriage information if applicable, property owned by the widow, witness(es) for the widow and date and place of signing the application. Thus the researcher has access to a wealth of information on their Confederate soldier ancestor.

The information I will be showing here is taken from “List of Persons Receiving Pensions Under Confederate Pension Act, State of Kentucky”, W. J. Stone, Commissioner. The pension papers of the Confederate soldiers and their wives were sent to the Kentucky Historical Society in 1951 for safe keeping. There are 4,840 folders, many duplicating applications of soldier and wife. The index (which I am showing) refers to both folders, after the name of the soldier only. Names of widows were not indexed.

The Confederate Pension Department of Kentucky was created following passage of “An Act granting permission to indigent and disabled Confederate soldiers, and the widows of Confederate soldiers,” approved March 4, 1912. (Acts 1912, Chap. 6ii, p. 41-46). The Pension Board and Confederate Pension Department were created by an Act approved March 18, 1914. (Acts 1914, Chap. 35, p. 115-123). The index was prepared in 1952 by the Kentucky Historical Society.

The information I will be showing is given in county order and will show the name of either the soldier or the widow and the mailing address. As stated, further information and the application can be found on
