Another Soldier
Boy Gives His Life In The Country’s Service
Oscar Lawrence Died In Illinois Training Camp Last Saturday Night

To Be Buried At Home

Oscar Lawrence, another of Trigg county’s soldier boys and son of Mr. And Mrs. E. C. Lawrence, who live three miles west of Cadiz, died last Saturday night at ten o’clock at the Great Lakes, Illinois naval training camp of spinal meningitis.

He enlisted in the navy in the fall and went into training at Great Lakes. A card from him to his mother written on Tuesday of last week and received Friday stated that he was well and getting along nicely. Friday afternoon a telegram came to his father announcing his serious illness. Another wire received Saturday morning announced that his condition was hopeless, and the sad message of death was received at twelve o’clock Saturday night.

Young Lawrence was born in this county, where he had lived until two years ago, when he went West and since that time he had lived in Nebraska, Minnesota, and other Western states. Last summer he was at home on a visit, and a short while after returning to the West enlisted in his country’s service.

He was twenty-one years of age last September. He was a splendid young man, had hosts of friends, and his untimely death has brought sorrow to many, and the adoring father and mother are heart broken over his sudden taking away.

Besides the father and mother he is survived by one brother, Donnie Lawrence, who is a soldier and stationed at Camp Shelby, Miss, and one sister, Mrs. Eura Thomas, who lives five miles south of town.

The body was prepared for burial at Great Lakes, and a wife received by his father stated that the remains left there at five o’clock on the afternoon of the 28th. When The Record went to press yesterday afternoon the body had not arrived, but was looked for last night. The remains will be taken to the family home west of town, and the burial will follow at the Lawrence grave yard four miles west of town.

Lonnie Lawrence, the brother reached her at noon yesterday from Camp Shelby to attend the funeral and burial.
