Not sure if you're still active on the forums since the message above is from 2002. Has anyone traced the John Mathis you refer to forward in time? I ask because my great-great-grandfather, John Matthews, came from the Green County Matthews family and by oral tradition was first married to Jemima Griggs. He moved to Madison County, Missouri, by 1805 and raised a large family with a total of three wives, later serving in the state legislature. A number of my genealogy cousins have full trees with his descendants. If there are sourced trees showing the descendants of John Mathis and Jemima Griggs living elsewhere, I'd be interested in seeing them. If the two men were indeed brothers, could it be that one used the Mathis spelling and the other the Matthews spelling?
