H.B. “Buck” Egbert, 100, of Madisonville, died at Oakridge Retirement Center in Madisonville on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012.

Born Nov. 23, 1912, in Caldwell County, a son of the late Brady Crockett and Laura Mae Barnes Egbert, he began working in the coal mines at the age of 13 and many years later, retired from Peabody Coal Company.

He was the oldest living UMWA member (80 years) in District 12 and the oldest living member of the area Woodmen of the World and Grapevine Baptist Church. He also farmed, did carpentry, laid brick and won blue ribbons at the fair with his wood crafting and did welding. He served on the Grapevine Cemetery board and was a Kentucky Colonel.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 49 years, Earline Fike Egbert; siblings, Artie, Jay, Everett, Pauline, Edna, Carmon, and a brother and sister in infancy; two sons-in-law, Bob Derington and Al Lopez and a daughter-in-law, Ann Egbert.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Utley Egbert; three children, Donald and wife Shirley Egbert, Marilyn Derington and Judy Lopez; grandchildren, Chris (Brandy) Egbert, Kim Murphy, Trudie (Eric) Shrewsberry, Tammi (Doug) Dant, Melissa (Rusty) Williams and Shanna (Paul) Cochran; great-grandchildren, Sgt. Josh Derington, Jordan Dant, Hilary (Nick) Wilson, Lelia Dant, Lexie Murphy, Anna Williams,Victory Shrewsberry, Shadowe Cochran and Brent Williams; a great-great-grandson, Braylon Williams; stepgrandchildren, Jimmy Hanks and Melissa (Paul) Harvey; and several nieces and nephews; stepsons, Barry (Debbie) Utley, Tim (Freda) Utley and Stanley (Stephanie) Utley; three stepgrandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Egbert were conducted Monday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m. at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville with Bro. Greg Gaddis, the Rev. Jack Holt and the Rev. Ralph Gill officiating.

Burial followed in Grapevine Cemetery. (Madisonville, Ky. )
