ROBERT T. SMITH was born in Hart County, August 3, 1844, and is the fifth of nine children born to Edward H. and Catherine (Anderson) Smith, the former a native of Cumberland County, and the latter of what is now Metcalfe County Ky., and of English and Scotch Irish descent respectively. Robert T. Smith was employed on his father’s farm until he was eighteen years old. In August, 1862, he enlisted in Company H, Eleventh Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry (Federal service), and served until February, 1805, when he was discharged on account of disability. After his return from the army he was employed as a salesman at various points in Hart and Barren Counties until 1868, when he went to Louisville, where he took a regular commercial course, afterward engaging as a traveling salesman for a book and stationery firm of Louisville until 1871. He was then elected teller of the Caverna Deposit Bank, holding that position for one year. He then engaged in the general fire and life insurance business, which he continued until 1878, when he removed to California, where he was engaged in mercantile pursuits for about three years. In 1881 he returned to Hart County, Ky., where he has since been employed as agent for a tobacco warehouse at Louisville. He has also held various official positions in the town and district. He was married October 27, 1875, to Miss Durinda Taylor, a native of Hart County, Ky. She is a daughter of Dr. S. P. and Magdalene (Munford) Taylor. Four children have blessed their union, only two of whom are now living, viz.: Lena and Harry. Mr. Smith and wife are members of the Christian Church. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, having advanced to the Royal Arch degree, and has served as W. M. of his lodge. He is also a member of the K. of H. In politics he is a Republican.
