WILLIAM C. BLAIR was born September 10, 1826, in Humphreys County, Tenn., and came with his parents, in 1838, to Hickman County, Ky., where he still resides. His father, James M. Blair, a native of North Carolina, was born in 1804, removed to Tennessee in childhood, and died in 1844. He was the son of Hughey, who died about 1832, aged eighty-four years. James M. married Nancy, daughter of E. A. Ballard, born in 1805, and died in 1829, and our subject is the result of this union. To James M. and second wife were born: Nancy C., Martha A., Sarah J., Elizabeth C. and James A. At the age of eighteen, William C. Blair began flat-boating, and followed that in connection with steamboating for four years, on the Mississippi River. He then followed farming until the beginning of the war, and after the war he engaged in the stock business for about four years; then in lumber trade, and of late years he has given his undivided attention to farming, in which he has been successful. March 39, 1848, subject was married to Miss Mary E., daughter of Richard and Martha (Perkison) Dickens, of Hickman County, and to them have been born George C. (deceased), William L. (deceased), Martha K. (Salmon), Mary W. (Salmon), Robert M., Elizabeth E. and Susan K. Two nephews, Weldon and William L. Benthil, are also members of the family. Subject is an extensive farmer and stockdealer, owning 1,400 acres of good land, 700 of which are in a high state of cultivation. He is a member of the Christian Church, and in politics is a Democrat.
