I have hit a snag. Hoping someone out in Marietta KS can help me.
Inside an FBI file involving CAPT EARL RUTH were these clues:
His wife EMILY RUTH in May 1919 told investigators their residence was Marietta KS.
(not sure if Emily took the train to Ft Dix to meet her husband? If she meant their permanent address was Marietta, KS and she followed her military husband and lived near base?. Earl had been stationed abroad, in France. He was discharged from Camp Dix in NJ. The file includes a NYC hotel, the McAlphine at 34th & Broadway.
I am wondering if Marietta KS was HER home? Where her parents lived? If Earl owned property there. His occupation before he joined the service was farmer.
She said the couple had been married for 11 years. EARL was born in KS too (Phillips County if my work is accurate). He lived in the Ft Leavenworth area for much of his life, is buried there. I haven't found a marriage license for them so far in Phillips CO or nearby or anywhere around the greater Kansas City area - I checked the MO side too . Wondering if it is in Marietta, KS? May 1907 to May 1908 would be the time frame - if she was being accurate with investigators.
EARL returned to France and wed a young French girl. There should be divorce papers filed somewhere. Wonder if those are in Marietta?
I need to find Emily and what happened to her!
The last item she provided was a letter where she said they were 'returning to Ft. Leavenworth'. The postmark for that letter was BAXTER, Jasper county, IOWA.
Talk about confusing!
Maybe someone working a family from Marietta or in Marshall can help me connect some dots?
Ancestry.com doesn't even have Marietta, Marshall, KS in their fast city. Every time I key it in it tries to divert me to IOWA. Anyone know why?
If I understand correctly, this town is close to the Nebraska line, NOT close to IOWA.
I hope some experts out that way can help me solve this mystery.
