John Tucker Gartzke, 78, of Conesville, Iowa, died Monday, November 25, 2002, at Unity Hospital in Muscatine.
Memorial services were held at 6 p.m. December 2 at the United Church of Christ in Conesville, with the Rev. Richard Crooks officiating. Honorary pallbearers were the grandchildren. A private family burial will be held at a later date at the Conesville Cemetery. There was no visitation.
A memorial fund has been established at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction.
He was born November 2, 1924, the son of Herbert Gustav and Margaret Rose Tucker Gartzke, in Iowa City. In June 1948, he married Helen Gayle Everett in Conesville. In December 1964 he married Catherine McDavitt in Iowa City.
He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II.
Mr. Gartzke was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital as a painter and maintenance technician until his retirement in 1985. He was also employed by the city of Conesville in law enforcement before retirement.
Upon retirement he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and working on his hobbies at home.
Survivors include his wife Catherine of Conesville; two sons, Herbert John Gartzke and wife Kay of Conesville, Colton Leon Gartzke and wife Karen of Florence, S.C.; three daughters, Rebecca Jane Holladay of Wilton, Julie Maureen Stanford of Conesville and Hannah Erin Gartzke of Conesville; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Gartzke and wife Pauline of Iowa City; and his sister, Virginia Voparil and husband Louis of Iowa City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Helen.
