I am researching the family of Jacob Butts and Sarah Butts who bought government land in LaGrange County, Indiana in 1835. Jacob Butts died during the Gold Rush in 1850. According to the 1850 census, his widow Sarah lived in Steuben County with her children. One of the couple's sons, a Samuel B. Butts bought 40 acres of land in December 1851 for $180, but sold it in February 1854 for only $26. Would anyone know if something happened in Steuben or Lagrange County that would prompt a sale at such a loss? The land was in Section 25, Township 37, Range 12.

The widow, Sarah Butts, married Silas Dutcher in Steuben County in 1851. The family left Indiana in 1854 for Iowa. The family was living in New Wine Township, Dubuque County, Iowa in the Iowa 1854 census.
