Obituary of Zern Hiner from Peru Daily Tribune of 6 Jun 1940, p. 2
Funeral rites were conducted at the American legation at Riga, Latvia at 10 o'clock Thursday morning for Zern Hiner, U. S. vice-consul and former Peru resident, who died at Riga Monday morning.
Word of Mr. Hiner's death was received by his mother, Mrs. Caroline Zern Hiner, from Secretary of State Cordell Hull Monday evening, the telegram stating that Mr. Hiner died of peritonitis. In a second telegram from Mr. Hull Tuesday evening, Mrs. Hiner was informed that she would be notified in due time as to when the body of her son would be shipped to the U. S.
Besides the mother, Mr. Hiner is survived by one sister, Mrs. Gordon Smith and a niece and nephew, Carolyn and Jack Smith.
