Regarding Delaware Co. IN Civil War hero, William J. Carson:

Honored by Muncie, IN, William J. Carson was born 30 Aug. 1840 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, of Quaker parents, John and Mary McCall Carson. After the Civil War, he moved to Muncie and married Miss Deborah J. Conn, daughter of Simon and Sarah Conn and they had one son who never married, Clarence H. Carson; Clarence lived in Indianapolis and was an organist for St. Paul's Episcopal Church for 40 years.

William's brother, Leonard, married Miss Laura Belle Conn, (sister of Deborah), and their children were Clifford, Mabel, (Mrs. Mark Fleming), Arthur and Clara Carson of Muncie. Other siblings of William and Leonard Carson were John Carson of Tipton; Isaac, Peter and Ellis Carson, scattered to other USA states. (It is possible there was a sister, Catherine, who married William Frank of Delaware Co., IN).

Hero William J. Carson was a musician in Co. E, 1st Battalion, 15th Reg. of the US Infantry. Carson was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions at the Battle of Chickamauga, GA, on 19 Sept. 1863, where he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire by bugling the troops "to the colors." His efforts encouraged them to hold off the enemy for many hours while the main body of the 14th Army Corps were able to escape to take a new position. Amazingly, William received ten bullet holes in his clothes, three piercing his hat, and one shot slightly wounding his left arm. He was taken prisoner and held in Pemberton and Libby Prisons; when released he weighed only 64 pounds. I believe he is buried in Beech Grove Cemetery, Kilgore Ave., Muncie.

His photo appears in "Deeds of Valor," 1905, Kendal & Co., Vol I.

For your information, other children of Simon Conn were Sarah Jane "Jennie," (Mrs. Sidney A. Jewett); Emma J., (Mrs. Thomas Pacey); Margaret, (Mrs. Newton Marshall); Clara Ellen, wife of M. C. Warner of Chicago; Mary E. (Mrs. William Michener; Louisa B., wife of Abraham J. Buckles of California.
