URIAH J. ANDERSON, Co A, 145th Illinois Volunteer Infantry

According to his declaration dated 1912, Uriah Jefferson "Jeff" Anderson was
born in Johnson Co IL on 15 Oct 1845. An application by his daughter in
1947 states he was born in Union Co IL on "October 10". He died at Tunnel
Hill, Johnson County, on 5 or 6 Mar 1920.
Jeff was married first at Vienna to Eliza J. Hand. (Note: According to the
online Illinois Statewide Marriage Index this marriage took place on 22 Sep
1863. In his pension questionnaire of 1899 Jeff stated "I was married first
December the 23rd, 1863. She died about 1871, as near as I recollect..."
In his second wife's widow's application it was estimated that Eliza had
died "about 1874".)
His second marriage, in Johnson County on 22 Dec 1878, was to Julia Ann
Wright. A. B. Brown, M.G., performed the ceremony.
According to her death certificate in the file, Julia Ann Wright was born 3
Jul 1864 in Jefferson Co IL and died 5 Jun 1940 in Bloomfield Twp, Johnson
Co IL. In her application for a widow's pension, dated 22 Mar 1920, her age
is recorded as 56. Her parents were Jim Wright and Susan Rains, both born
in Illinois. Informant was Almus Anderson of Tunnel Hill. She was buried
(in what appears to be "Graves Cemetery") in Bloomfield Twp on 9 Jun 1940.
Funeral director was Lucas Parker, Vienna. E. A. Veach, M.D., Vienna,
signed the certificate.
Julia's 1920 declaration was witnessed by Charles W. Goddard and Charles M.
Pickens, both of Vienna, before C. W. Mills, Notary Public. Her post office
address then was Tunnel Hill.
In his questionnaire signed 14 Mar 1899, in answer to the question "Do you
have any children living?", Jeff stated (spelling corrected) "I have
children living" and listed:
Almus Gordon Anderson, born 9 Sep. "He is 13 years old."
Bertha Anderson, born 6 Jan. "12 years old"
Pearl Anderson, born 13 Mar. "10 years old"
Ethel Anderson, born 10 Sep. "8 years old"
(Loolia?) Anderson, born 8 May. "6 years old"
Jeff added "This is the best I can do. I am no scholar for business."
A typewritten "application for pension or compensation" in behalf of Pearl
Anderson, incompetent child of Uriah J. Anderson, was filed by Ethel Cagle
of Creal Springs as conservatrix for Pearl. It appears to have been filled
out on 21 Apr 1947. It states Pearl Anderson was born 4-10-1886 in
Bloomfield Twp, Johnson Co IL.
Pearl's typewritten death certificate is also in the file, stating that she
died 31 Dec 1963 at Creal Springs, Williamson Co IL, where she had lived for
the previous 22 years. It gives her date of birth as 4-10-1888 and her
parents as Uriah Jefferson Anderson and Julia Ann Wright. Informant was her
sister, Ethel Cagle of Creal Springs. Certificate was signed by Robert S.
Wallace, M.D., and the funeral director was H. A. Cosby. Both were of Creal
Springs. Pearl was buried in Mt. Olive Cem, Bloomfield Twp.
Uriah J. Anderson served as a private in Co A, 145th Ill Vol Inf. He was
enrolled 2 May 1864 at Vienna to serve 100 days. He was mustered out with
his company 23 Sep 1864. A summary of his service from the Adjutant
General's Office mentions 1st Lt James W. Damron and Pvts. Marcellus A.
Sullivan and Carroll C. Creig being on detached service - place and duty not
stated - at the same time as Anderson. Regiment was stationed at St. Louis
MO, Rolla MO and Camp Butler IL during his term of service.
