Roy Henry Gerling, 81 of rural Carmen, Ill., died Thursday, Nov 9, 2000 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Iowa.
The son of Lawrence and Minnie Buescher Gerling, he was born Oct. 11, 1919, near Mediapolis. On Dec. 21, 1947, he married Joan Huber at Mediapolis. He attended Mediapolis High School and served in the Army during World War II.
He was a retired farmer, farming in the Carmen community. He was a member of the American Legion, a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and D.A.V.; was a member of the Warren-Henderson Farm Bureau and was a charter member of the Hend-Co Hills Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing after his retirement.
Survivors include his wife of Carman; one sister-iln-law, Ruth Ann Gerling of Carman; one niece, Christine Gerling Cole and husband Larry of Davenport, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son and two brothers.
Visitation was Sunday at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis where the family met with friends in the afternoon.
The funeral service was held at 2 pm. Sunday at the funeral home with music provided by Joyce Bulter, vocalist and Lyn Isom, organist. Pallbearers were Larry Gerling, Bob Gerling, Kurt McChesney, Duayne Buescher, Leroy Timmerman and Harold Swanson. Honorary bearers were Larry Nelson, Don Nelson, Ted Nelson, Jerry Winegard, Bob Cosens and Bill Brown. Interment followed at the Kossuth Cemetery, with military flag presentation.
Memorials have been established for the Henderson County Healath Department, the Carmen United Methodist Church and the Mediapolis First United Presbyterian Church.
