HELENA, MONTANA — John C. Hansen, 84, of Helena Montana died Feb. 10, 2014 surrounded by family at his daughters home of causes incident to age. He was born May 20, 1929 in a log cabin at Mink Creek, Idaho to Niels Wilford Hansen and Tora Virgia Wilde.

In his youth, he developed a love of mountains, outdoors, horses and hunting. He attended Preston schools where he was active in sports and FFA. After graduation, he helped on the farm before serving a Spanish speaking mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Texas. Within days of his return, he was drafted into the Korean War and served with the U.S. Army, 2nd Infantry Division, 23rd Infantry Regiment. His unit received the Presidential Commendation. Following the War, he was a commercial driver for England. He returned to Preston and worked for Palmer Motors.

He met Janeal Cazier Hoffman, a widow with four young children. They were married in the Logan Temple on Nov. 7, 1958. He worked at Thiokol. They relocated to Montana and ranched at Toston with his father-in-law Vordis Cazier. He served as the Three Forks Branch President and as High Councilor and was a High Priest in the Helena Stake. He was on the School Board for Broadwater County. He later farmed in Townsend and then worked with Bingham Trucking of Tremonton, Utah. He enjoyed hunting, rodeos, sports, and following the Lewis and Clark trails.

He enjoyed his retirement years in Preston with his wife and then lived with his daughter in Helena. He is survived by his eight children. Michael (Patty) Hoffman of Shelley; Wayne (Pauline) Hoffman of Idaho Falls, Marilyn (Alan) of West Jordan, Deanna Hoffman of Helena, Marian (Richard) Mallard of Rexburg, John Hansen of Townsend, Pamela (Dean) Helmick of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; Geraldine (Scott) Colvin of Helena. He is survived by all of his 22 grandchildren, and 62 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janeal (2011) and his siblings, Vinora, Hugh, Adria, Ane, and MarDene.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 15, 11 a.m. at the Townsend LDS Church 916 Broadway , way, Townsend, Montana. Family will receive friends Friday 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Townsend LDS Church. Burial will be in the Deep Creek Townsend Cemetery under the direction of Webb Funeral Home.
