TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Randy J. “RJ” Robinson, 58, passed away unexpectedly in Taipei, Taiwan, on May 18, 2013. RJ was born in Logan, Utah, on June 28, 1954, to Don and Wanza Robinson and grew up in Weston and Preston, Idaho. He graduated in English literature and grammar, magna cum laude, from Utah State University in 1978. He studied Russian and German when he was young and obtained certifications in French and Italian in 1984. While a candidate for MA in Chinese Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California, he also received certification in Mandarin Chinese from the International Mandarin Training Center, Dongbei University of Finance and Economics, Dalian, People’s Republic of China in 1991. He then settled in Taipei where he lived and worked for two decades. Possessing a powerful intellect and a gift for languages, RJ disliked conformity in all its guises. Most recently, he was employed as a professor at Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei, Taiwan, where colleagues and students alike recognized his gift for teaching with wit and humor.

RJ was preceded in death by his partner David Cook, his parents and his sister Donna. He is survived by his sisters Vicki, Julie and Patricia, and his brother James. A memorial service was held in Taipei on May 24, 2013, at Fu Jen Catholic University. Representing RJ’s family at the ceremony was his nephew and close friend, Michael Kjar.
