DAYTON — Paul K Winward, 82, passed away Jan. 28, 2013, at the Franklin County Medical Center in Preston, Idaho. He was born Nov. 27, 1930, in Clifton, Idaho, the son of Bertie William Winward Jr. and Elizabeth Wuthrich Winward.

He served an LDS mission in the North Central States Mission (St. Paul, Minn.). He also served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953-55 as a corporal during the Korean War. He earned the Sharpshooter Badge, National Defense Medal and the U.N. Service Medal. He married Mary Elaine Dalley on Aug. 27, 1953, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

He graduated from the University of Idaho, Idaho State and Utah State University and held a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and sociology teaching. He earned a master’s degree in family living and child development. He also pursued a Ph.D. in Family Living from BYU.

He taught in the Church Educational System for 35 years. He taught seminary in Enterprise and Delta, Utah, and Dayton and Preston, Idaho.

He was a very active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints having served as a bishop, high councilor, stake president’s counselor and temple worker for 12 years.

He was the mayor of Dayton city for eight years.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, honey bees and wood cutting. He was a kind, loving, witty and knowledgeable person who will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife Elaine of Dayton; daughter Lori Kay (Thomas) Owen of Blackfoot, Idaho; son Douglas Winward of Blackfoot, Idaho; granddaughter Andrea Kay Winward of Ogden, Utah; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four brothers and four sisters, Edward (Tara) Winward of Orem, Utah, Delora (Blair) Henderson of Dayton, Idaho, Bertie William (Elda) Winward of Preston, Idaho, Alma H. (Bonnie) Winward of North Ogden, Utah, Brent L. (Diane) Winward of Malad, Idaho, Linda Winward of Salt Lake City, Utah, Elaine Gailey of Clifton, Idaho, and Judith Ann (Kent) Howell of Clifton, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his son David Paul Winward; and three sisters, U-Vonna Nash, Elizabeth Jowers and Raelene Sears.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, in the Dayton Ward chapel with Bishop Wesley Beutler conducting. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Military rites and interment will be in the Dayton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund.
