Surnames: Matney, Bingham
Caribou County Sun, Thurs. Oct. 17, 2013

Carol Bingham Matney, 59, of Eugene, Ore., passed away peacefully at home on Oct. 8, 2013, surrounded by her devoted sons, brother and faithful dog. Carol was born June 15, 1954, in Columbia, Tenn., and grew up in Soda Springs, Idaho. In high school, Carol participated in cheerleading, choir, band and track. She was selected to represent her school in the Presidential Classroom in Washington, D.C.

She married Thomas Gifford Matney on Aug. 13, 1977, and they were blessed with two sons, Thomas Walter and Aaron Robert. For 18 years, they lived in Lewiston before moving to Eugene, Ore. Carol remarked that she felt her proudest accomplishment was raising two fine young men.

With a passion for nursing, Carol earned her associate in science (RN) from Boise State University, a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Utah College of Nursing, and a master's of science degree in community health nursing from the University of Portland. Carol served as a public health nurse in Lewiston and became associate professor of Community Health Nursing at Lewis-Clark State College. Carol earned her post-master's certificate in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Idaho State University.

For the past 14 years, she has helped countless students and community members through her work as family nurse practitioner for the Eugene School District's school-based health centers. Throughout her career, Carol was an advocate for health and healing.

Carol loved the outdoors - gardening, hiking and long days at the Oregon coast with her family. She loved to travel and visit extended family. Carol would often visit her family's walnut tree farm in Tennessee and treasured the work and time spent there with her sons and brothers. She also enjoyed long walks with her beloved dog, Joey. She cherished spending time on the front porch with her friends and neighbors. Carol will be remembered for her caring spirit, adventurous nature, dry wit and quiet resolve. The dignity and grace with which she handled the last months of her life are a testament to her character.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Gifford Matney. Tom was a loving husband to Carol and served as director of media services and associate professor at the University of Oregon prior to his passing in October 2008. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Elise Bingham; brother Pat; and niece Holly. She is survived by her sons, Thomas and Aaron; brothers Barry (Mary Ann) Bingham and John (Debe) Bingham; sisters-in-law Marianne (Frank) Valenta, Susanne (Alan) Shuler and Julie (Mark) Weitz; special friends Elly Ortiz and Braulio Escobar; many nieces, nephews, wonderful friends and faithful dog, Joey.

Memorial contributions are welcome and checks should be made out to 4J School- Based Health Centers, in care of Debbie Johnson at North Eugene Health Center, 200 Silver Lane, Eugene, OR 97404.

Many thanks to the staff and volunteers at Sacred Heart Hospice, Willamette Valley Cancer Institute, and Carol's family, friends and neighbors for their help and loving support.

Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 777 Coburg Road, Eugene, Ore. Burial will take place at a later date in Tremonton, Utah.
