Elizabeth (Beth) Rogers Wilkes passed away on Feb. 10, 2014 in South Eastern, Idaho after a brief illness. Beth was born in Paris, Idaho on Dec. 17, 1921 to Walter William Rogers and Rose Ella Nelson. Her father died when Beth was a child and her mother and stepfather, Henry Clem Humphreys, raised her.

Beth spent her early childhood in Paris and Bloomington. She married Gaylen Lathaire Wilkes on Dec. 19, 1942. Gaylen had joined the military and become a Naval Aviator shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During the early
days of the war Beth made her contribution to the war effort working at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden.

Beth and Gaylen were a typical wartime family and moved all over the country, as the Navy needed them. They lived in California, Texas, Virginia, Illinois, Florida,
Maryland and Rhode Island. Beth and Gaylen had six sons and one daughter and they were born during and after the war in the various cities where they were stationed in at the time. Beth and Gaylen made many good friends during their navy service and had many great adventures traveling around the country and seeing and experiencing new things foreign to their upbringing in rural Idaho.

After Gaylen’s death in an aircraft crash at sea in 1959, Beth worked and attended college at night and became a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She worked at Fredericka Manor in Chula Vista and Paradise Valley hospital in National City for many years while also working full time caring for seven children.

Beth loved bowling and participated in league bowling with friends for many years. She also loved hand crafting porcelain dolls and doll clothing and attended crafts classes with many friends in Chula Vista and Spring Valley. In addition to her doll making and collecting Beth loved baseball and was an ardent San Diego Padre fan and enjoyed playing card games with her beloved grandchildren.

Beth was predeceased by her parents, her husband Gaylen and son Gerald Philip Wilkes as well as her siblings Anna Ruth Lowe, Roger Humphreys, and Wayne

Beth is survived by five sons, Robert Gaylen (Ivonne) Wilkes (Paris), Jeffery Walter (Marilyn) Wilkes (Bloomington), Gregory E. Wilkes (Palm Desert), Brent R. Wilkes (San Diego )and Larry Martin (Julie) Wilkes (San Diego), her daughter Patricia (Frank) Combs (Tucson), 20 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, two sisters Mary Jo (Gordon) Aland, Jane (Conrad) Michaelson, a brother Ray (Marlene) Humphreys and numerous nieces and nephews.
