SUNSET-Allen Irving Stephens of Sunset, Utah, died at his home Monday, October 29, following a long, painful and debilitating illness. He is the son of Berton E. and Vivian Irving Stephens, (deceased) both of Montpelier, Idaho, and a beloved brother to his three sisters-Lucille (Eugene, dec.) Pugh of Salem, Oregon; Thelma (Weller, dec.) Bishopp of Maple Valley, Washington; and Ramona Michaelson, (dec.) of Bellevue, Washington.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Nora B. Thurgood Stephens of Sunset, Utah, and seven children and their spouses-Kristy (Lyle) Nelson of Mountain Green, Utah; David (Carma) Stephens of Las Vegas, Nevada; Bryan (Jeanette) Stephens of West Point, Utah; Lee (Valerie) Stephens of Bountiful, Utah; Ruth Ann (Kelly) Parker of Las Vegas, Nevada; Nancy (James) Bell of Walker, Michigan; and Luci (Russell) Lundberg of Los Angeles, California. He is the proud Grandpa to twenty-five grandchildren and twenty-Five great-grandchildren.
Allen is a graduate of Montpelier High School in Idaho where he was active in music, lettered in basketball and boxing, and served as senior class president. Following high school, he was a member of the United States Army until WWII ended. He served a Stake mission in Montpelier, Idaho, and a full-time mission in Southern, California.
He is a graduate of Utah State University, in Logan, Utah, earning a BS Degree in Vocational Agriculture Education, and an MS Degree in Adult Education. He taught High School and was Advisor to the FFA in Springville, Utah and in Paris, Idaho. He then taught for ten years at Weber State University, and was Advisor to their Young Farmer chapter. In addition to his career as an educator, Allen owned or managed several businesses, including a wholesale food services company, a Massey-Ferguson dealership, Allen Stephens Insurance, and Stephens Land and Livestock. He enjoyed being a member of the Spouses group associated with the Utah House of Representatives.
Allen was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in Priesthood quorum leadership, as a teacher, clerk and High Councilor. He served in Bishoprics for more than twenty-four years, including seven years as Bishop, and was a member of the Sunset Stake Presidency.
The family wishes to thank Tender Care Hospice for their service, and especially John, Susan, RN, and Shellie, Andrea, Lu Ann and Maava, CNAs. Special thanks also to the Sunset City Fire Department, and to R. Robert Taylor, MD of Tanner Clinic and Stephanie Olsen, MD, of Utah Cardiology for their many services to Allen
In lieu of flowers, donations in Allen's honor may be made to the LDS Perpetual Education fund.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Sunset 1st Ward, 250 W. 2431 N. in Sunset, UT. Family will greet friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Myers Roy Mortuary, 5865 South 1900 West, Roy, UT and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services.
Interment: West Point City Cemetery, 40 N. 4000 W., West Point, UT.
