I would like to share information with anyone that might have additional information on my Leggett line.

The book "A Source Book on the Early History of Cuthbert and Randolph County, Georgia" by Annette McDonald Suarez indicates that the site of the Randolph County Courthouse (lot 76) was purchased in August 1831 from the "Orphans of Jeremiah Leggett of Henry County" Ga. after they drew this site in the Georgia Land Lottery of 1827. Jeremiah Leggett's orphans were allowed to draw in this lottery based on his service in the War of 1812

My 3ggf Jeremiah Legget was born before 1775 probably in Bertie County, N.C. He is listed as having served in the Washington Couny, Georgia militia as a private 1793-6 along with John Legget who served 1793-4. He is listed in the book "Index to War of 1812 Service Records for Volunteer Soldiers from Georgia" by Kratovil as having served in Col Ezekial Wimberly's 3 Regt. Georgia militia as a private. He participated in the 1805 Jackson County, Ga. Land Lottery. His name is on a list of those who had letters remaining in the Post Office at Monticello, Georgia on Sept. 30, 1818.He is listed as head of Household in the 1820 census of Walton County, Ga. Jeremiah Leggett "of Jasper County Georgia" is listed as having drawn land in the 1820 lottery in Appling County, and the 1821 Lottery in Irwin County.

"Orphans of Jeremiah Leggett" were listed as drawing in the Henry County, Ga land lottery of 1827. This land was in the part of Henry County that later became Fayette County.

Fayette County, Ga. Probate records indicate that Penelope Leggett and Zerah Lewis made bond for $1000 on the condition that Penelope Leggett be made the guardian of John, Thomas, Sophrona, Wilie, Mary, Jane, and Elizabeth, orphans of Jeremiah Leggett, recorded 10 Feb. 1832

Penelope apparently moved with her children to the part of the land in present day Cuthbert that was not sold for the courthouse soon after Jeremiah's death.

Penelope's children became prominent participants in the affairs of early Randolph County.

Thomas F. Leggett, my 2 ggf, born about 1813, is recorded as having voted on Jan. 30, 1836 in an election for officers for a local cavalry company that was being formed in Randolph County, Ga. (In the book Randolph County, Ga. Vol 2 by the Randolph County Historical Society, page 3.) Wylie S. Leggett is listed as serving in this company. Thomas Leggett married Martha Ann Collins on April 11, 1841 in Randolph County, Georgia. He later moved to Dale County, AL, and died in Mississippi of smallpox during the Civil War.

His brother, Wylie S. Leggett, served in a group of volunteer militia commissioned in Randolph County to serve under D. D. Snelgrove on March 12, 1836 and he was pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church in 1852, according to the book "Randolph County Georgia Volume II" by the Randolph County Historical Society. He later moved to Lynn Parish, La. and founded a Baptist church there.

Their brother, John D. Leggett was Justice of the Peace for Randolph County in 1847, according to the book "Randolph County Georgia Volume II" by the Randolph County Historical Society. He was Road Commissioner of Randolph County in 1846 according to the book "A Source Book on the Early History of Cuthbert and Randolph County, Georgia" by Annette McDonald Suarez. The only Leggett listed in the 1840 census of Randolph County, Ga. is John Leggett.
