John C. “Joey” Bracewell III, 56, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013. He was a resident of Appling County. He was a long time employee of J.C. Bracewell, Jr. Enterprises and was preceded in death by his parents, John Charles Bracewell, Jr. and Grace Bracewell.

Survivors are his son, Nick Bracewell of Raleigh Durham, N.C.; two brothers, Charles and Leslie Bracewell and Ronnie Bracewell of Baxley, a niece, Lexi; an uncle, Edward and Brenda Bracewell of Baxley; an aunt, Betty Murphy of Tampa, FL and lifelong friends, George and Martha Eason of Baxley.

Memorial services were held Thursday, June 27 at 4:00 p.m. at the Miles-Nobles Funeral Home Chapel.

Visitation was held one hour prior to memorial services on Thursday.

William Franklin (Frank) Ellis, 79, of Lawrenceville, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2013. He was the eldest son of the late William Calvin and Alice Meeks Ellis of Baxley, and was preceded in death by siblings, Jasper Benjamin (Jakey) Ellis, Johnny R. Ellis, and Jeanette Ellis Barnard.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Freda Caudell Ellis; son and daughter-in-law, William H. (Bill) and Kris Ellis of Stockbridge; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Brent Willis of Flowery Branch; four granddaughters: Andrea, Jennifer, Ashley and Jessica; great grandsons: Evan, Trip and Dylan; brothers: Jerry W. Ellis, of Dover, FL, Larry C. Ellis of Baxley, and James L. (Loyd) Ellis of Wagener, S.C.; sister, Linda Ellis Walls of Ambrose, GA; mother-in-law, Dovie Caudell of Lawrenceville; sisters-in-law: Juanita and husband, Virgil Clark, Rita and husband, George Jordan and Pamela Harris; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.

Frank served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of North Metro Baptist Church. Frank retired as a Supervisor from Georgia Power after 35 years. After retiring, his favorite pastime was gardening, and he shared his garden’s bounty with numerous friends, family members, and neighbors.

A funeral service to honor the life of Frank Ellis was held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26 at Tom M. Wages Lawrenceville Chapel. Dr. Frank Cox officiated. Interment followed in the Gwinnett Memorial Park.


Shirley Holton Griffin, 59, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013 at the Medical College of Georgia. She was a native of Coffee County and had lived the past 39 years in Appling County; a Certified Nurse’s Assistant for 15 years at Appling HealthCare System and a member of Harvest Chapel Church of God. She was preceded in death by her parents; EZ and Mary Viola Holton; three brothers, Allen Bryant, Ronnie Cothern and Billy Stapleton and a daughter in-law, Kim Griffin.

Survivors are her husband of 39 years, Joel Glenn Griffin; two daughters and sons in-law, Shauna and Randy Rowell of Hazlehurst and Renee and Brad Thompson of Alma; two sons, Joe Holton and Jason Griffin both of Baxley; two sisters, Jurrell Dukes of Hazlehurst and Willene Reed of Pensacola, FL; one brother, J.T. Bryant of Hazlehurst; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild and several nieces, nephews and other family also survive.

Visitation was held Wednesday, June 26, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Miles-Nobles Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Earl Wiggins officiating.

Interment followed at Omega Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Jacob Jackson, Dusty Jackson, Russell Griffin, Kevin Thomas, Kenny Griffin and Curt Griffin.

Honorary pallbearers were Appling HeathCare System and Harvest Chapel Church of God.

Jerome Revels, 59, died June 21, 2013 at 519 Heath Street in Baxley. Jerome was born to the late Robert and Vonoree Revels on Oct. 21, 1953. He was married to Selina Revels and served the citizens of Appling County for 25 years as deputy of the Appling County Sheriff’s Department.

Survivors include is wife, Selina Revels of Baxley; one daughter, Christy (Stephen) Smesny of Vidalia; one son, Jason Revels of Baxley; three sisters, Judy (Wesley) Thomas of Brunswick, Marie (Thomas) Sapp of Baxley and Linda (Hussien) Khorramzadeh of Swanee and one grandson, Grayson Smesny of Vidalia.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 24 in the Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Daniels and the Rev. Rick Brown officiating. Interment followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Alma.

Active pallbearers were Appling County Sheriff’s Department.

Honorary pallbearers were the Baxley Police Department and Appling County Sheriff’s Department.

Musical selections were rendered by Floyd Hunter and David Williams.

Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.


Cecil Lee Patrick, 63, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013.

Services were private; family may be contacted at their residence.

Born in Surrency to the late Eugene and Mattie Skinner Patrick, Cecil Lee Patrick was retired from Armstrong World Industries. He loved old cars, his motorcycle, and especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Patrick; his daughter, Kimberly Connell (Wesley) of Gray; two step daughters, Jessica Spence (Neal) of Byron and Lydia Pruett of Macon; grandchildren, Christopher Green (Ashlee) of Haddock, Brandon Thompson of Gray, Joshua Spence and Abigail Spence of Byron and Jordan Pruett of Macon; one great-granddaughter, Anslee Douglas and one brother, Clyde Patrick (Carol) of Dacula.

Jimmie Lee White passed away on June 26, 2013. Jimmie was born April 2, 1945 in Surrency to the late Rufus and Hazel White. His Christian experience began at an early age. Upon accepting Christ in his life, he joined Second Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He attended the Appling County School System; upon graduating he began his career as a self-employed logger.

In addition to his parents, a brother, Sidney White, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Flossie White; one daughter, Janet Wilson; three sons, Troy (Kathy) White, Lothair White and Dewayne (Simone) White; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank (Dot) White and Clinnis White; three sisters-in-law, Floretta King, Ella Bert (Carl) Marion and Zola Mae Gibbs; one brother-in-law, Dewitt Gibbs and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 1 at Surrency Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Sherwood Gibbs presiding. Eulogy was given by the Rev. Daniel Smith. Interment followed in Surrency Grove Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Marcus Gibbs, Mike Gibbs, Brad Wilcox, Charles Jones, Stanley Gibbs, James Gibbs, Wilbert McTier and Colon Hayes.

Musical selections were rendered by the Surrency Grove Choir, the Rev. Sherwood Gibbs, Carletha and Christina Wright, granddaughter, Keneshia Register and Jason Powell.

Janice L. Wilson, 52, of Port Huron, died Friday, July 5, 2013.

She was born May 23, 1961 in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Janice was employed with Superb Products. She enjoyed sewing, especially costumes, dolls and clowns and making quilts for various charities.

She is survived by her husband, Terry; daughter, Lisa Young; two grandchildren, Khristopher and Andrea Nicole Young; her mother, Carolyn (Eduardo) Cortes; four sisters, Debra (Jeff) Bernstein, Lauri (Steve) Watson, Cynthia (Rick) Cappadona and Teresa (Tommy) Hipps; a brother, Donald (Maria) Arnold; sisters-in-law, Patti Wilson, Gloria (Drew) Turnbull, Peggy Wilson, and Nancy Showers; brother-in-law, Randy (Dawn) Wilson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Roger Arnold; brother, Roger Arnold; sister-in-law Cathy McCanna and brother-in-law, Wayne Wilson.

A memorial gathering will be on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Eagles on Howard St. followed by a luncheon. Memorials may be made to the family or American Cancer Society.

Mary Jane Hendrix, 81, died June 28, 2013 in Jesup. Mrs. Hendrix was born Nov. 23, 1931 in Homestead, Florida. She worked in the School Food Service Department for the Appling County School System before she retired. Mary was a member of Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Bristol. Mrs. Hendrix has lived in Appling County since 1973.

Her husband, James Alphonso Hendrix, Sr., her son, James A. Hendrix, Jr. and her granddaughter, Michelle Hunt, preceded her in death.

Survivors include four daughters, Brenda (Pete) Edwards of Rockford, Illinois, Sue (Brian) Bedard of Ocala, Florida, Barbara Dawson of Ocala, Florida and Gail (Rusty) Barnes of Jesup; two sons, Leonard (Diane) Hendrix of Rogers, Arkansas and David Hendrix of Homestead, Florida; two sisters, Elinor Hendrix of Lake Placid, Florida, Barbara Stout of Corpus Christi, Texas; two brothers, Leonard H. Hamker, Jr. and John Hamker of Maryland; also surviving are eleven grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, July 1 at Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church with the Reverends Steve Hughes and Bryan Davis officiating. Interment followed in Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Bristol.

Active pallbearers were Rusty Barnes, Brian Bedard, Evencio Herrera, Johnny Metts, Mark Thornton and Gary Lightsey.

Honorary pallbearers were Altamaha Health Care and the Piney Grove Adult Sunday School Class.

Miles Funeral Home in Hazlehurst announces the funeral service for Andrew Blevins, 37, of Baxley, who passed away Thursday, July 4, 2013. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Bible Baptist Church in Hazlehurst. The Rev. Manford Gilbert and the Rev. Jinker Horton officiated with burial in the Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery in Jeff Davis County with Military honors.

Blevins was born in Boone, West Virginia and he was employed with Wal-Mart.

Survivors include his mother, Lora Blevins of Baxley; step-son, Joseph Hughes of Baxley, step-father, Henry B. Rowell of Hazlehurst; several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

Active pallbearers were Dorothy Workman, Janet Sue Collins, Willie Watson, Stephen McDonald, Al Stanley and Herman Hayes.

Music was rendered by Lorine Dykes and the Bible Baptist Church Choir.

Travis “Trap” Vaughn, 33, passed away Monday, July 1, 2013 at the Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick after an extended illness. Trap was born September 30, 1979. Upon accepting Christ in his life while living at GBCH, he joined First Baptist Church in Blackshear. He was a native of Laurens County and had lived in Appling County area for more than 18 years. Travis completed school in Appling County and attended ATEC for welding.

Survivors include his children, Travis Sentell Vaughn, Jr., and Lyberti Sen’Draiya Vaughn; parents, Ronald Dudley and Earlene Renfroe; five brothers, Christopher Moorman, Richard Dudley, Marcus Renfroe, Rico Dudley and Maurice Dudley; uncles, Rev. Johnny (Bessie) Vaughn and William Hudson; one aunt, Prophetess Connie (Clarence) Johnson; God-family, JoAnne (Irvin-deceased) Oglesby and brother, Theo Oglesby, a beloved friend, Tracy Copeland and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 5 at Dublin New Birth Ministries with the Rev. Dr. Johnny Vaughn, pastor and Bishop H. J. Sinclair officiating. Interment followed in the family plot at Royal Spring Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Dudley Funeral Home in Dublin.


James Watts Chance, 83, died July 6, 2013 at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin. Chance was born Dec. 18, 1929 to the late William Henry and the late Bell Johnson Chance. He proudly served our country in the Korean Conflict in the United States Army. He was a retired machinist and worked for Reynolds Aluminum. Chance was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. He had lived in Appling County for 19 years.

Survivors include his spouse, Shirley Chance of Baxley; two daughters, Sherry (Kevin) Carter and Cathy (Eddie) Carter, both of Baxley; four sons, James (Frances) Chance of Swainsboro, Henry (Sharon) Chance of Augusta, David (Gail) Chance of Buford and Terry Thomas of Baxley; eleven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and four nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two special friends, Lynn Todd of K’Ville and Gladys Carter of Baxley.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 10 at Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Daniels officiating. Interment followed in Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville.

Active pallbearers were Derek Chance, Clint Crapps, Stacy Crapps, Tyler Thomas, Kevin Carter and Lee Chance.

Musical selections were rendered by Gail Carter and the Rev. Tommy Daniels.

Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Norma Jean Hollis Hignite, 71, of Pensacola, FL, died at home after a long illness on July 5, 2013.

Preceded in death by parents, Norman Hollis and Willie Mae Hollis, sister-in-law, Dorothy Hollis and brother, Buddy Hollis.

Survived by husband, Ken Hignite; daughter, Wendy West and son, Jeff (Rachael) Hignite; five grandchildren, Dustin Griffin, Michael and Zachary Dickerson, and Alana and Lauren Hignite; a great-grandson, Eli Griffin; three sisters, Joyce Thompson, Wanda (Steve) Smith and Sheryl (Ronnie) Nipper; two brothers, Carroll Hollis and Wendell Hollis; one sister-in-law, Faye Hollis and several nieces and nephews.

Jennifer “Jennie” Googe, 40, died Sunday, July 21, 2013. Jennie was born May 23, 1973 in Appling County. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church. Jennie was employed by the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier. She was preceded in death by her father, James Edward Googe and a sister, Pamela Janet Googe.

Survivors include two sons, Caleb Googe and Jesse Googe, both of Baxley; her mother, Patti Googe of Baxley; a sister, Patricia “Lynn” Gardner of Broxton; a brother, Michael James Googe of Hilton Head Island, S.C. and one niece and three nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 25 at Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Wayne Williamson and Marty Anderson officiating. Interment followed in Midway Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Adam Hunter, John Hunter, Ricky Hunter, Michael Beecher, Rowdy Gribble and Jeff Herrington.

Honorary pallbearers were all friends in attendance.

Musical selections were rendered by Sherry Beach and Freda Jones.

Carlton Donald Jackson, 78, died July 20, 2013 in the Genesis Health Care System. Jackson was born Nov. 11, 1934 to the late Lewis and Nancy Jackson. He was a lifelong resident of Appling County and a member of Zoar Baptist Church. Jackson was a security guard at the Georgia State Prison in Odum. He also proudly served the United States of America in the National Guard. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Connie Stark, a sister, Betty Lightsey and three brothers, Lewis Ward Jackson, Andrew Jackson and Bruce Jackson.

Survivors include one daughter, Pamela L. Jackson of Moultrie; one son, Sidney (Shirlene) Jackson of Baxley; two sisters, Wynell (Theron) Herrington of Baxley and Jenny (Delton) Drawdy of Waycross; one brother, Robert (Ollie Mae) Jackson of Baxley; and one sister-in-law, Mildred Jackson. He is also survived by five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and sixteen nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, July 22 at Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. F. Blanton officiating. Interment followed in Zoar Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Jimmy Jackson, Eddie Jackson, Lonnie Lightsey, Nathaniel Linn, Lambert Lightsey and Travis Lightsey.

Musical selections were rendered by Nancy Gill and Susan Lariscy.

Frances Tillman Presley, 94, died Thursday, July 25, 2013. Mrs. Presley was born Sept. 29, 1918 in Appling County to the late James Herman Tillman and the late Effie O’Connor Tillman. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church where she served as church treasurer for many years. Frances retired from B. C. Moore’s.

Two brothers, Darryl and Phillip Tillman and three sisters, Louise Church, Pansy Martin Rudolph and Helen Gibbs, preceded her in death.

Survivors include one sister, Eva Vernadene James of Martinez; a brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Frankie Tillman of Baxley and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27 at Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Tommy Daniels and Sam Holland officiating. Interment followed in Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were nephews: Nathan Tillman, Dickie Tillman, Reggie Tillman, Harry Mason, Matthew Mason and Randall Thomas.

Musical selections were rendered by Kim Hall.

Gerald Highsmith
September 19, 1947 - July 12, 2013

Gerald W. Highsmith, 65 of Jesup, Ga. died Saturday, July 12, 2013 in St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah, Ga. after an extended illness. The Coffee County native had spent most of his life in Wayne County and was a member of Altamaha Baptist Church. He was retired from Interstate Paper Company and enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He was predeceased by his father, Willie O. Highsmith, Jr. and his sister, Sonja Highsmith Reddish.

Survivors are his wife of 44 years, Hazel McCall Highsmith of Odum, Ga.; a daughter and son-in-law, Russell and Anita Highsmith of Odum, Ga.; his mother, Mary Jowers Highsmith of Jesup, Ga.; grandchildren, Hunter Highsmith, Madison Cook, Taylor Cook, Eric Roberts, Heather Blocker and Cassie Spell; great grandchildren, Adelyn Roberts, Clayton, Bryson, and Kinsley Blocker.

Funeral services will be 11 A.M. Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the Rinehart and Sons Chapel with Rev. Parnell Aldridge and Rev. Jack Lee officiating. Private interment services will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Appling County. Active pallbearers will be Michael Blocker, Eric Roberts, Larry Barnes, Keith Highsmith, Ricky Peacock and John Chambers. Honorary pallbearers will be Davita Coastal Nephrology staff and his friends at the Interstate Paper Company.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Paula Thompson
(December 13, 1966 - July 22, 2013)

Paula Marie Thompson, 46, passed away Monday, July 22, 2013 after a short illness. She was born December 13, 1966 in Athens, GA and had lived the past 34 years in Baxley.

Survivors include her three daughters, Sierra and Aaron Smith of Baxley, Vickie Thompson of Baxley and Allie and Jimmy Sigmon of Adrian; two grandchildren, Tommy Baxley and Carlie Smith; one sister, Tammie and Gary Orvin of Baxley; mother and step father, Shirley and Wayne Peterson of Baxley; father and step mother, Ronnie and Donna Thompson of Hollyhill, FL; one niece, Ashley and Derek Griffis of Baxley; two very special friends, Tammy Taylor of Walkerville and Linda Linam of Baxley.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 25, 2013 at 4 pm at Miles~Nobles Funeral Home Chapel.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 pm prior to funeral services on Thursday.

Interment will follow in the Omega Cemetery.

Janet Marie Spell
(March 4, 1961 - July 28, 2013)

Janet Marie Spell, 52, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013 at Meadows Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County. She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth “Rooster” Spell; parents, James and Eula Mae Crapps and a brother, James Jerry Crapps.

Survivors are her two children, Brandie Crapps of West Palm Beach, FL and Jason Wynn and wife Olivia of Baxley; two grandchildren, Meliek Monroe and Meliea Monroe of West Palm Beach, FL; one sister, Barbara and husband Quitman “Peanut” Williams of Baxley; two brothers, Michael Crapps of Baxley and Donny Crapps and wife Pam of Baxley; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Graveside funeral services will be held Friday, August 2, 2013 at 3pm at the Surrency City Cemetery with the Reverend Carlton Rowell officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral services on Friday at the cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be all friends and family in attendance.

Novadeen Thornton Jackson
(December 10, 1934 - July 31, 2013)

Surrency - Novadeen Jackson, 78, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at her residence under the care of Southern Care Hospice. She was a native of Appling County; a member of the United Pentecostal Church since 1964 and a member of Cornerstone United Pentecostal Church since 1966. She was a former Sunday school teacher and a retired seamstress and caregiver. She loved crocheting, sewing and quilt making and was very faithful in giving to her church. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Lightsey Thornton and two brothers, Dewey Wright Thornton and James Edward Thornton.

Survivors are her three daughters, Sharon Ford of Surrency, Debra Ann and Edward Aldrich of Surrency and Jequito and Stanley Griffin of Surrency; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one sister, A. Faye Jones of Surrency; several nieces, nephews and other family also survive.

Graveside funeral services will be held Friday, August 2, 2013 at Millikin Church Cemetery with the Reverend Ray Worley officiating. The funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home at 11 am on Friday.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral service on Friday at the funeral home.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dustin Aldrich, Tommy Griffin, Hunter Mosley and Michael Mosley.
