Classification: Query
Surnames: Lawrie, Laurie
My name is Willie Lawrie and I live in Perth, Scotland.
My family come from Buckhaven, Fife, Scotland
I have a query on Rootschat (USA) re the following.,626033.0.html

I then found this forum and thought I would place it here as well.
John Lawrie b 2nd June, 1821, Buckhaven, Fife, Scotland, son of John Lawrie, linen weaver & Margaret Anderson, who married 13th May, 1814 at Buckhaven, Fife

In the 1841 Scottish census Margaret (Anderson) Lawrie (widow) is living with her bairns Margaret, John & Betsy in Buckhaven.
In the same census there is no occupation shown for John Lawrie, age 20.
This is all I know about this John Lawrie.
He had 4 sisters & 1 brother, all living in Scotland and all accounted for.
BUT his brother William Lawrie had a son John Lawrie b. 1845, Buckhaven.
I (with the aid of some others) found this John Lawrie immigrating to the USA in 1880 and was living in Bridgeport, Fairfield, Connecticut
with his wife Elizabeth Fyfe and their two young daughters Jane & Margaret.

I have most of the info on this family but while looking for deaths etc we found this:
John Laurie died Feb. 25, 1882, buried Lakeview Cemetery, Bridgeport, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA
Inscription: CIVIL WAR. Co. D, 9th C.V.I. AE 64.

Checking back the censuses we found this
(I have omitted some of the irrelevant data)

1880 US census
John Lorrey age 59 b Scotland married to Mary Lorrey age 62 b Ireland
living Bridgeport, Fairfield, Connecticut
Both his parents were born in Scotland
Occupation: Works Sew'G M. Fcty
Note: Wheeler & Wilson Sewing Machine Factory, Bridgeport, manufactured sewing machines between 1850 and 1907

1870 US census
John Lowry aged 50 b Scotland
living in Bridgeport, Fairfield, Connecticut
The household included Mary Lowry 51 and Elizabeth Oneil 17

1860 US census
John Lowry age 40 b Scotland

Also recorded are Mary Lowry 42 and Mary E Oneil 8

We also found this
1873, a John Laurie, inspector, was living at 5 Cullen (Bridgeport).
1874, John Laurie, inspector, h 5 Cullen (and Mrs. Mary Laurie)
1876, John Laurie, mechanic, h 5 Cullen
1877, John Laurie, mechanic, 5 Hallett
This John died in 1882
This next one is the John who immigrated in 1880
1883, John Lawrie, blacksmith, h 188 E Main

Is it possible that the older John Lawrie is the one born 1821, Buckhaven Fife?
Did the nephew John Lawrie immigrate to Connecticut because his uncle was living there?

We found some info on his Civil War record

Is he the uncle of the John Lawrie who immigrated in 1880 to Bridgeport, Fairfield, Connecticut?
Can anyone connect the older John Lawrie to the younger one?
