Crime in Central New York
Sentences of Prisoners in Rochester for murder

Edward Dorsey, convicted of manslaughter of the
third degree killing with Bridget Carroll at a house on
Spring Street in this city in the summer of 1869
were called up and received their sentences.

I was curious so I researched further into earlier articles:

Mother and daughter Bridget Carrol and Margaret O'Brien, the latter a bright, intelligent looking girl about seventeen years of age, were charged with stealing a Quantity of
brown alpaca from a store on Grand street. They
pleaded quilty, and the woman said she was driven
to crime by poverty. She had been twenty-three
years in America, and four years ago she was deserted by her second husband. She had brought up by a family of ten children.

Judge Dowling, I think the little girl may be reclaimed, though she has been twice convicted before
by this court. I am afraid, however, there is no
hope of you who are her mother. You are bringing
that girl up to steal, and if she is with you she will
be ruined. I don't believe you are driven to this
sort or thing by poverty. You might apply to the
Commissioners or Charities and they would do something for you. I shall send that girl, as she is a
Roman Catnolic, to the House of the Good shepherd,
and you to the Penitentiary for four months. Your
