Fred Herrod, 85, died Saturday at his St. Helena home.

Mr. Herrod was born on Nov. 17, 1902, in Arkansas to Joseph Fields and Sara Lagrone Herrod. He grew up and attended schools between Arkansas and Mississippi.

Mr. Herrod served in the U.S. Navy from 1923 to 1927 and following his discharge on the West Coast he lived in the Bay Area and worked for Union Oil Co. in Rodeo for many years.

In 1955, just previous to is retirement, he and his wife moved to St. Helena where they enjoyed the country style of living.

He is survived by his wife, Claudia of St. Helena; one son, Richard of Portland, Ore.; three daughters, Lorraine Thorsted of Petaluma, Barbara Avila of Covelo and Virginia Orecchia of St. Helena; three brothers, Sam of Richmond, Lou of Healdsburg and Howard of Illinois; numerous grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Private family graveside services will be held Tuesday at St.Helena Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Chapel.

The family suggest donation be made to Hospice of Napa Valley, 3 Woodland Lane, Deer Park, 94576, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

St. Helena--Claudia M. Schmidt, 95, died Sunday.

A native of Italy, she moved to Napa County in 1952.

Mrs. Schmidt is survived by her husband, Lloyd; son, Richard of Oregon; sister, Genevieve Bettini of Menlo Park; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Helena Cemetery, 2461 Spring St., St. Helena. Father Gordon Kalil of St. Helena Catholic Church will officiate. Services are being cared for by Morrison Funeral Chapel, St. Helena.

Claudia Della Rosa Schmidt

Longtim St. Helena ranch owner Claudia Della Rosa Schmidt died July 2. She was 95.

Mrs. Schmidt, born May 18, 1905 in Remeni, Italy, first came to the United States when she was 16 years old. Her mother and father bought a candy stroe in Crockett and she worked at C&H sugar mill until the famiily moved back to Milano, Italy.

She returned to the U.S. in the late 1920s and owned and operated a restuarant in Rodeo. During World War II she worked in the sail loft at Mare Island Naval Shipyards in Vallejo making American flags that flew over the ships going to war.

In 1946 she purchased a ranch in St.Helena and lived there from 1949 until her death earlier this month.

Mrs. Schmidt is survived by her husband, Lloyd Schmidt; a sister, Genevieve Bettini of Menlo Park; and a son, Ricardo Della Rosa of Oregon.
