Bishop SUMNER WALTERS
The funeral service for Bishop SUMNER WALTERS, 80, father of May Ann Robbins of Mill Valley, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Bush & Gough Streets, San Francisco.
Bishop Walters, who led the Diocese of San Joaquin Episcopal Church in Fresno for 24 years until he retired in 1968, died Sunday at his home in Walnut Creek.
He previously had served as rector of Christ Episcopal Church of Alameda for seven years starting in 1935 and as minister at Trinity Episcopal Church in San Francisco in the 1940's.
Bishop Walters was president of the Northern California Council of Churches in 1944 and a trustee of the Pacific School of Religion from 1944 to 1959. He was a native of Newark, N.J.
Surviving, besides his daughter, are his wife, Evelyn T. Walters; a son, the Rev. Sumner F.D. Walters of Vancouver, Wash.; and 8 grandchildren.
Burial will be at Old Chapel in Millwood, VA. The family prefers that memorial contributions be sent to the Sumner Walters Conference Center, Box 1012, Oakhurst, Calif.
