Funeral Services For S-Sgt. Cooney
Funeral services will be held next Wednesday, April 13, for S. Sgt. Robert Joseph Cooney, who was killed in action in Germany in December, 1944. Robert, son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Cooney, formerly of Corte Madera and now of San Francisco, was 22 years old when he lost his life. He served in the infantry. The Silver Star and Purple Heart were awarded to the young (sic) here posthumously. The citation reads: "Staff Sergeant Conney's (sic) boldness and coolness served as inspiration to all who participated in the mission and he obtained information which was of material value in future generations."
The young man attended the Larkspur-Corte Madera school and Tamalpais High school. He was the brother of William Cooney of San Rafael and John and Stanley Cooney of San Francisco and nephew of Mrs. H. A. Young of Mill Valley and a cousin of Mrs. Charles M. Johnson of San Rafael.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at the National Cemetery at San Bruno.
