GEORGE PALMER PUTNAM, DEATH VALLEY RESORT OWNER, TAKEN BY DEATH

Major George Palmer Putnam, internatinally known publisher, writer, explorer and soldier, died at Trona Hospital on Wednesday, January 4, at 6:05 a.m.
Stricken with a gastric hemorrhage and uremia on November 27 he had been rushed to the hospital from Stove Pipe Wells resort in Death Valley which he and Mrs. Putnman have operated during the past two years.
Major Putnam had made a partial recovery but suffered a relapse this weekend. He leaves his wife, the former Margaret Haviland of Chicago, who became his bride in 1945 and two sons David and George Putnam III of New York.
Amelia Earhart, Major Putnam's former wife who made history with her pioneer flying records disappeared when on a flight over the Southern Pacific in 1936.
Major Putnam who was born in Rye, New York in 1887 was for many years active in G.P. Putnmans Sons publishing company of New York and London. He was the author of ten books and had collaborated on many others. Best seller among his own volumes was Soaring Wings, the biography of Amelia Earhart, Hickory Shirt his most recent book and Death Valley and Its Country are based on early days and present developments in Death Valley.
Aviation Expert
Putnam severed connections with the publishing company 12 years ago and came to California. For five years he headed the editorial department of Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
During World War II Major Putnam who had distinguished himself as a lieutenant in World War II was commissioned a Major with the first group of B-29 bombers sent to China and India. He was with the B-29s on 16 crossings over the famous Hump between China and India.
Shangri-la
Planning to devote his time to writing Putnam with his wife moved to "Shangri-La Putnam" at Whitney Portals. They became so much interested in Death Valley that they decided to invest in Stove Pupe Wells resort and spent the winters and springs there and summers at the Portals.
