In late May, 1869, the pregnant Maria Weichel and her husband George were attcked by Indians near where Denmark, Kansas now stands. George was killed and Maria along with Susanna Alderdice were carried away by the Indians. Later that summer in northeastern Colorado territory, the 5th Cavalry, lead by the not yet famous scout, William F. Cody, attacked the Indians and attempted to recover Maria Weichel and Susanna Alderdice. Susanna was killed and Maria was wounded and rescued. She was sent east after recovering and had her child at Omaha, Nebraska in December of 1869. She later married John Mantz and in 1880 they are found living in San Franciscio.
