Hi Taylor,

The family story about Linton Springston in the Washington County History Book differs quite a bit from his Civil War service records. According to those documents, he died of erisypelis (a skin infection) in late February 1864 in a hospital at Fort Smith, Arkansas, while serving in the Union Army. The records also show that he first served for a brief period in the Confederate Army, but deserted and later joined up with the Union Army. Linton's father, William Springston, stated in a Southern Claims Commission file that both Linton and another son, Calvin, were forced to join up with the Confederates. William Springston made it very clear that he and his family were Unionists.

I haven't had any luck yet in tracking down pictures of Linton and Sophronia, other than the small images on Still hoping somebody out there in Ancestry Land has the originals or access to good quality copies.
