Captain Stanley Smith, 86, of Ida (Cleburne Co.) Arkansas, died at his home on February 18, 2002.
He was the son of William and Lela (Scott) Smith, and was born in Bandon (Coos Co., OR) on May 29, 1915.
Before becoming the bar and harbor pilot for Yaquina Bay, Captain Smith operated towboats for Hoffman Towing Co., and was a commercial fisherman before that work.
During his nearly 50 years in Newport (Lincoln Co.), he was active in the Masonic lodge and served for many years as a Dad Advisor for both DeMolay and Rainbow Girls.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris (Ostrom) Smith; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Charles McClain of Ida, Arkansas; a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley P. and Darlene Smith of Gig Harbor, Washington; grandsons Stanley, Kyle, Gary, Keith, Phillip and Matthew; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at the family home in Ida, Arkansas on February 23. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to hospice in care of Linda McClain, 3430 Heber Springs Road North, Ida, Arkansas 72546.
