Jean Joan Schafer, 78, of Apache Junction, Ariz., died Wednesday, Aug 2, 2000, at Desert Samaritan Hospital in Mesa, Ariz.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Aug 9, at Apache East Estates. Her cremains will be brought to Iowa at a later date.
Mrs. Schafer was born Nov. 11, 1921 in Wapello, a daughter of J. Blaine and Bernice Williams Hawkins. She was a 1940 graduate of Wapello High School and was married to Robert A. Schafer Dec 25, 1941.
With their two children, they moved in 1957 from Iowa to Mount Vernon, Wash., where Mr. Schafer was employed by the Skagit Valley Herald. Jean was a homemaker, as well as a business woman working for many years in women's apparel. The couple resided there for 30 years and later divided time between the northwest and the Phoenix, Ariz., area. In 1988, they moved to Apache Junction.
Survivors are the husband; a son Kenneth R. Schafer, LaConner, Wash.; a daughter Joan E. Wilson, Portland, Ore.; two grandsons, Clint Wilson, Apache Junction and Jeff Schafer, Seattle, Wash.; her aunt Elizabeth Burch, Danville, Iowa; niece Linda J. Myers, Berkely, Calif.; cousin Wilma Williams, Wapello and cousins in Omaha, Neb. and Missoula, Mont.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a half-brother Roger Hawkins, half-sister Josephine Myers, aunts Doris Williams Barber, Omaha, and June Hawkins Barrett, Danville.
