Alaska pioneer Henry Burton, 79, died Dec. 24, 2004, at Providence Alaska Medical Center.

A visitation will be from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church followed by a funeral at noon. The Rev. Alonzo Patterson will officiate. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Mr. Burton was born Jan. 7, 1925, in Shreveport, La., to Alfred Burton II and Henrietta Monroe-Burton. He attended local schools and professed a hope in Christ at an early age.

Mr. Burton enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served his country for three years. He moved to Fairbanks in 1949 in the company of lifelong friend Lawrence Colbert. While there, he worked in construction.

Mr. Burton relocated to Anchorage, where he married Emma Jane Pease in December 1953. The couple purchased a home on Bragaw Street, and it is still the family home.

Mr. Burton was a business owner for more than 50 years, working as an independent contractor with the U.S. Postal Service.

He was a founding member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as an usher.

Mr. Burton and his wife appeared in Jet magazine during the 1960s in an article featuring Alaska pioneers.

His family said: "He was an avid fisherman and always had a ready smile. Henry will be remembered by his giving spirit and his hardy laugh."

He was preceded in death by his adopted daughter, Shari; three brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors are his wife of 51 years, Emma Jane Burton of Anchorage; sister, Molly McReady of Oakland, Calif.; sister-in-law, Christine Robinson of Anchorage; and many nieces, nephews and friends in Alaska, California, Louisiana and Texas.
