I may have some new info for you.
I believe that James McCutchen, note spelling, can be found in the 1871 Canadian census, in Prince William, York Co, New Brunswick. He was born in New Brunswick. With wife Margaret they had 5 children, John, Henry, Milton, Jane and Margaret. (Margaret "Maggie" married Walter Ross Graham, a 1st cousin of my grand-mother. I guess that makes us 1st cousins twice removed.) I have not been able to find Margaret's maiden name.
They appear in the 1880 US census, once again with the spelling "McCutchen", in Dows Prairie, Humboldt Co CA, which info you appear to have, although by that time I believe, without documentation, that Margaret had died shortly after Herbert was born. I believe they moved from NB to Humboldt Co about 1875, after giving birth to James Gilbert in 1871. Herbert was born in 1876 in Bayside. On 6 May 1877, James married Hellen (Anger) Sherman, appears as Ellen in census. Hellen had been married to ?? Sherman, born in Michigan, and they had a daughter, Dorothy Ann. James and Hellen had two more children, Lucretia and Charles who appear in the 1880 census.

If you are interested, I have info on the 4 children of Walter and Maggie. Maggie died 13 Dec 1899. Walter then married Isabelle Burg in 1900. They had 1 child, Frederick, and she died 5 days after he was born. He then married Helen George, born in York Co NB, in 1906 and they had 3 more children.

Sorry this is so wordy, but hope it is useful.
