I’m not related, but I tried to research this a little.

I believe Ella Horsley and Ella Thomas are two different people. I found the Ella Horseley that you mentioned in 1870 and 1880 censuses. As you said, she is white (in both census records).

1870 Shelby Co. AL
John C Horsley M 38 GA
Elizabeth Horsley F 37 GA
Daniel Horsley M 15 AL
Thomas Horsley M 13 AL
Jane Horsley F 12 AL
William Horsley M 10 AL
Sarah A Horsley F 8 AL
Ella Horsley F 6 AL
Susan Horsley F 3 AL

1880 St. Clair AL
J C Horseley Self M 48 GA
Elizabeth Horseley Wife F 44 GA
Sarah A Horseley Dau F 18 AL
Ellen Horseley Dau F 16 AL
Susan Horseley Dau F 14 AL
Molly Horseley Dau F 10 AL
Idellah Horseley Dau F 8 AL
Benjamin Horseley Son M 5 AL,
James Horseley Son M 3 AL

The confusion on the public tree you mentioned may stem from the fact that there is a marriage record for this Ella Horseley who married Thomas Carrol 29 Jan 1882 in St. Clair Co. AL. The person who submitted that tree may have assumed that the “Thomas Carrol” should be Cal Thomas.

==========================================================================

The Cal and Ella Thomas family (African-American) are actually enumerated twice in 1920 Tuscaloosa Co. census. The records were recorded one day apart. Hard to believe there is so much difference in ages recorded and even a few differences in names of those living in the household.

1920 Buhl, Tuscaloosa Co. AL Pct. #29 (10 Jan 1920)
Cal Thomas Head M 53 AL
Ella Thomas Wife F 54 AL
Justa Thomas Dau F 26 AL
Vivian Thomas Dau F 18 AL
Geogia E Thomas GrandDau F 6 AL
Vista Thomas Grandson M 1 AL
Bettie M Thomas GrandDau F 0 AL
Maggie Bankhead Dau F 19 AL

1920 Buhl, Tuscaloosa Co. AL Pct. #29 (9 Jan 1920)
Cal Thomas Head M 49 AL
Ella Thomas Wife F 40 AL
Vivian Thomas Dau F 17 AL
Georgia E Thomas GrandDau F 6 AL
Sylvester Thomas Grandson M 1 AL
Bettie M Thomas GrandDau F 0 AL

And, here is the family in 1930:

1930 Tuscaloosa, AL
Cal Thomas Head M 56 AL
Ella Thomas Wife F 56 AL
Vester Hughes Grandson M 11 AL
Betty M Dunson GrandDau F 11 AL

I could not find them in 1940.

I believe that Vivian Thomas (daughter of Cal and Ella) married Hilton Dunson. Hilton died and Vivian married a 2nd time to Harry McKinistry on 2 Jun 1944 in Jefferson Co. AL. I found that marriage record. I am attaching it below. It lists the parents of Vivian Thomas as Cal Thomas and Ella Thomas Guyton.

I don’t know if they got Ella’s name in the correct order. Perhaps it should have been recorded as Ella Guyton Thomas??? If that is the case, then Ella was a Guyton before she married Cal Thomas.

Or, perhaps she married a man named Guyton after she married Cal Thomas???

Do you know when Ella Thomas died? Do you know if she married more than once?
