I haven't tried doing any of my Pike Co. research since I moved to England in 2001.
However someone just sent me a record that has blown my mind so I'm putting this out
there in case anyone can help enlighten me.
My 3rd Great Grandfather, Cornelius Seay Black, disappeared from the census records
after 1880. His wife Frances Caroline Ellis Black appeared in the 1900 census listed
as a widow so I ASSumed Cornelius had died during that time.
Tonight someone sent me a Pardon record showing that Cornelius Black had been convicted
of murder and was sentenced November 16, 1894 to serve 20 years.
He was then pardoned in 1898. He only served 4 years of a 20 year sentence.
Of course I was flabbergasted to see this and have no knowledge of this in my family
tales. I can only assume there must be court records on this case and newspaper
articles about the murder. This also makes me wonder, if he was pardoned two years
before the 1900 census, was he indeed dead in 1900??
If anyone can help, it would be so much appreciated. You can contact me at to discuss any charges to be paid if you have access to these
