My great grandparents, Robert Morrison Smith and Ethel Gertrude Payne have been a dead end for years until I found both of them on the 1901 Census. I am hoping that someone will know their families.
Payne, Joseph M Widowed b. 30 Oct 1861 England
Payne, Wm M Single b. 12 Jul 1884 England
Payne, Frank J.W. b. 5 Jul 1887 Ont
Payne, Mary b. 24 Apr 1894 Ont
Payne, Ethel G.E. b. 5 Aug 1882 England
Joseph, Wm and Ethel all came to Canada in 1886
This family is in District 118 Toronto West Sub District C-42 Ward 5 (I found the exact address of this household as 392 Sully Street. From current maps this is now Sully Cresent and I looked for a post code for it but the numbers are differant, no longer a 392.)
Smith, Margaret F Widowed b. 28 Dec 1850 Scotland
Smith, Mabel L. F Single b. 7 Jan 1885 Ont
Smith, Mary E. F Single b. 23 Aug 1880 Ont
Smith, Catherine G. F Single b. 8 Oct 1878 Ont
Smith, Robert M. M Single b. 1 Nov 1876 Ont
Smith, Christina F Single b. 4 Nov 1871 Ont
Margaret came to Canada in 1854. (This house's address was 418 Ossington Avenue)
Both families are listed as Baptists.
I have from family tradition that they were married 17 May 1902.
I found Robert's family on the 1881 Census as well:
Robert SMITH M Male Scottish 45 Scotland Brush Maker
Margaret SMITH M Female Scottish 30 Scotland
Christina SMITH Female Scottish 9 Ontario School
Margaret SMITH Female Scottish 7 Ontario School Robert SMITH Male Scottish 4 Ontario
Grace SMITH Female Scottish 2 Ontario
Mary SMITH Female Scottish <1 Born: Aug; 8/12 Ontario
all are listed as Presbyterian here.
They are living in St Stephen's Ward, Toronto. (Not sure where that is in relation to Ossington Ave, would like to know)
Then I found a Robert Smith in the 1871 Index as a brushmaker and presbyterian age 40 born in Scotland. He's in Sub District St Patrick's Ward (C), District Toronto West 046, Division 4 pg. 59. If anyone has access I would love a transcription of this household.
In conclusion If anyone can point me in the right direction to searching for more info on these individuals I would really appreciate it. I am in Australia and most of my research experience is with those living in the United States, so I am unfamiliar with alot of the online resources available for Canada.
Does anyone know where most who migrated from England arrived at in Canada? Especially if they settled in Toronto?
