I grew up in the Whitefish area (actually not too far from Suikkola Rd.) The region does indeed have a very large Finnish community; Sudbury and Thunder Bay are essentially the two "capitals" of historical Finnish settlement in Canada, and the Finnish community in the Sudbury area is disproportionately in the rural areas at the south end of the city.

Whitefish is within a district in the southwest of the city called Walden, which also has roads named Kusk, Salminen, Lindala, Ronka, Ranta, Salo, Manninen, Aino, Janti, Jalonen, Niemi, Oja, Santola, Mikkola, Jacobson, Seppala, Finnwoods, Jarvi and Suomi -- and in the Wanup in the southeast of the city, there are roads named Lavola, Makynen, Kivi, Finni and Pellinen. And that's just the street names; there's a very large number of Finnish families still living in both areas too.

Finnish street names are rarer in the urban core of the city, although there is a Silpaa Street just off the Kingsway (the main east-west road from downtown toward the east end of the city.)

I unfortunately don't know anything about the history of Suikkola Road itself, but you could try contacting the city archives ( ) or the city's branch of the Finnish Canadian Historical Society ( ).

A book that might also be helpful -- or might be interesting to you even if it doesn't answer your specific question -- is "Between a Rock and a Hard Place: A Historical Geography of the Finns in the Sudbury Area", by Laurentian University professor Oiva Saarinen ( ).
