Minerva Utman (yes, it is Utman) was my ggg grandmother. She was born in Fredricksburg, Ontario Sept 1841. Fredricksburg is close to northern NY, but many of these people moved back and forth from Canada, NY, VT, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, etc. some even more south/southwest. Minerva was one of at least 8 children of Henry Utman and Jemima Harper, and she married Daniel Schwartfigure and had 13 children. My gedcom is online, you can download her ancestry; I am sure she is related to your BW, probably a nephew.
Many of the Utman's married Schwartfigures. The spelling on Schwartfigure varies widely, the original spelling being Schwerdtfeger. So look for them in your searches too.
My Minerva lived her last years in Fowler, NY, with her daughter and son-in-law.
I haven't seen your BW in my research, but I haven't worked on Minerva's line for some months now. I will be getting back to her soon and will keep my eyes open.
One of the things that held me back in research was assuming that my ancestors stuck around the same area! Now I have learned that someone in Iowa in one census might have been in VT or Canada 10 years earlier, and then NY ten years later. As important as family was, these people had to go where land and jobs were! So I would do a soundex search and look at every census for place of birth for your Utmans. Minerva and Daniel went back and forth between Canada and the US and had some kids here, some in Canada, and this threw me off track at times because I was just looking in NY!
Utman's have been erroneously spelled "Ottmann" in the census.
Good luck and I will keep my eyes open.
