Well, I can't say for sure, but Compo's from Ontario went to Michigan, Ohio, and NY, and I would think that they are related, even if not for way way back, but when you said about family lore saying he was French Canadian and Native American, I immediatley thought of my family in Ogdensburg. It was kind of, and still is, swept under the carpet; they all say they're French Canadian in my family until you pry it out of them.
I have found out in the last few days that my family moved at times from Ontario to NY to MI to OH and back, so it may be the case with your Compo's too. I do know that there are alot in Ontario, northern NY, and Vermont.
I will let you know if I can make any connections definitely. I am still trying to find out how exactly my family and the Compo's are related. The dits and name changes don't ease the process!
I do have LaFlair's in my family (someone had mentioned this in regards to Compo's), specifically Bill LaFlair married my aunt Louise Schwartfigure around 1919, then he went "away" lol and she married Walter Dunkerly. But I know that LaFlair's were living near my family since the 1880's.
