Orangeville Banner, June 27, 1957, page 6 - Mono Resident Dies After Long Illness
John McBride – After a long illness, followed by a year’s hospitalization, John (Jack) McBride passed away in Dufferin Area Hospital, Orangeville, on June 13th. Mr. McBride, who had made his home on lot 7, con. 4, East Mono, after living in Toronto for some years, was born in Jarrow-on-Tyne, England, fifty-three years ago, the son of Annie Shearer and Thomas McBride, now deceased. On coming to this country, he was employed as a government ship inspector for some time and then, for six years, was with Toronto Shipbuilding, before moving to Mono. Here indifferent health meant a quieter life, although he was interested in community affairs and served as rector’s warden of old St. John’s Church, 7th line, Mono, for a time.
His wife, the former Lily Rose Vey whom he married April 8, 1923, in St. John’s Church, Toronto, survives him, as well as a family of nine sons and two daughters: Norman, Bill, Ron and Jim, of Toronto; Jack, of Orangeville; Dennis, Bobby, Ricky and Glenn, at home; Joan (Mrs. Bud Ferguson) and Lynda, of Orangeville. Five sisters and three brothers remain; Jenny (Mrs. Cator), of Toronto, Nan (Mrs. Rae Roberts), Sally (Mrs. C. Jensen), Hilda (Mrs. C. Day), Myrtle (Mrs. Pool), Norman and Jim, all of Vancouver; Sam of Toronto. There are ten grandchildren as well. A brother, Thomas, died in 1955.
Rev. L. McFarlane conducted the service from the Turner Funeral Home on June 15th, and Mr. McBride’s favourite hymn, “Abide With Me,” was sung. Pallbearers were two nephews, Stan and Bertie Cator, Toronto; Clyde Buchanan and Bill Lewis, of Toronto; Joe Varey, Mono Mills; Milton Dodds, Mono. Flower bearers were Herb. Brooks, Norm Rochwerg, Alvin Ferguson, Julius Griffith, Bruce Donaldson and Archie Liddel. Burial was in old St. John’s Cemetery.
