thank you for the info! spent the day looking at anything I could find for the BEATONS in Dorset...turns out there is a couple of spellings - BURNGATE, BARNGATE,,,found a family of BEATONS that lived there (probably before) 1841. In that census There is SUSANNA BEATON 70, & children RICHARD 47, REBECCA 45, EUNICE 40, ANN 38, & MARIA 30.
1851 - SUSANNA is dead - predeceased by husband JOHN BEATON IN 1840 - this would be our JOHN BEATON father of SARAH MARY married in NL.
ANNE, JANE (not in the house in the 1841 census) MARIA, REBECCA & RICHARD are living at BARNGATE...the ages ages are all different and REBECCA is the oldest at 60.
1861 LULWORTH CENSUS- BARNGATE FARM: RICHARD 68 , ANNE 61, JANE, 59, MARIA 52 and a BAILIFF - GEORGE ELLIS 50....all are UNMARRIED and the BEATON clan are of INDEPENDANT MEANS.
1871 - RICHARD 78 & sister EUNICE 75 - both born in STOKE are all that is left.
1881 - no BEATONS anywhere in the area....no one married and no children from any of them.
In the "OLD GRAVEYARD" - WEST LULWORTH are:
JOHN BEATON (d1840) 72, SUSANNA - WIFE (d1847) 77, and children SAMUEL (d1836) 31, ANNE (d1864) 65, REBECCA (d1865) 72& MARIA (d1864) 57.
So the ages have changed up again.
JOHN BEATON (Bap SEP 9,1868) s/o JOSEPH BEATON (APR 24,1743-JAN 23,1780) & MARY VINCENT - JOSEPH poss parents ROBERT BEATON (MAR 4,1706) NETHER COMPTON, DORSET & FRANCES. ROBERT'S father may be ROBERT BEATON (1685? -1724) of NETHER COMPTON, DORSET.
So what we have here is - somehow children of JOHN BEATON, BURNGATE, ENG. (SARAH MARY BEATON) got over to NEWFOUNDLAND & would be born anywhere from 1790 up and married REV H.J. FITZGERALD no age...also she was given away by her brother-in-law REV J. BURT saying that another sibling was there and married either to REV BURT or a sibling was married to REV BURTS brother or sister. COMPLICATED!
So how easy would it be for one more sister (MARY BEATON) to also be there and marry a fellow DORSETSHIRE native - JAMES GILL (1800)? Ages are right
These BEATONS either never married or married late (30's?) and that would fit into our MARY BEATONS age group of being born 1790's to 1805. will check REV J. BURTS wife.
There it is...not any closer but a pretty good speculation....please add anything ...thanks MICMAK1
