Surnames: Sparks Drost Hanselpecker Tippitt
Greetings Fellow Researchers............. I recently began to gather notes on the Sparks family that originated in Queens Co. with Daniel Sparks b 1769 in NB? married 1st to Lucy d 1810 2nd to Hannah b 1788 d 1860. Many of their descendant then moved to Sunbury Co. then some later to York, Carleton and Kent Co. At present the origin of this original Daniel is unknown.
The sources of almost all of these notes are taken from on-line at the PANB or on site at the PANB from the parish census starting in 1851 of all the Sparks that I could find. Other minor sources used are noted in the notes.
These then are my initial notes on this family and as yet I have been unable to elaborate/ collaborate these notes with anyone to develop the Sparks Genealogy of NB.
My line is Daniel and Eleanor Sparks found on the last page.
I look forward to and welcome then any correspondence who has an interest in this family.

In First Families

as complied by the New Brunswick Genealogical Society, (see web site), the first family with the surname Sparks to enter and be recorded in NB was:

Daniel Sparks b 1769 NB? m 1794 in Gagetown 1st wife - Lucy b ? buried Mar. 28 1810 at Gagetown

Their Children;

1.Daniel baptized on Sept 29 1807 from Grand Lake, Queens Co. (note – This Daniel is the only one listed as coming from Grand Lake – the rest are listed as from Gagetown) There is a strong maybe that this is our Daniel b 1797 in Sheffield. If so he would have been age 10 when he was baptized.

2.Lucinda (Lucy) Jane baptized on Oct. 9 1807 - Gagetown - d after 1880 in Springfield Parish, Kings’s Co., m Oct. 24th 1842 in Gagetown, Queens Co., to William Fairweather, s/o Benjamin Fairweather and Martha Beardsley, b 1809, Queens Co., d after 1876. They settled in Thornetown, Johnson Parish – no children. #1551 in Howe Genealogy is related to William Fairweather

3.James baptized on Mar 4 1809 – Gagetown –

4.Margaret Anne baptized Aug 2 1795 – Gagetown – She is listed as an adult at the time of her baptism. If Daniel m Lucy in 1794 how could this be a child of Daniel as listed in the baptism records? She is listed as an adult in 1795 therefore she could be a sister to Daniel? If an adult she would have to be b 1775 or so. There is also the mystery of Elizabeth b 1783 married to Richard Drost… could she be a sister to Margaret as well?

5.Robert baptized on Apr 16 1816 - Gagetown– He is listed as an adult at the time of baptism. This could be our Robert b 1801 below, if so, he would have been 15 at the time.

6.Mary baptized on Nov 4 1819 –Gagetown - Listed as an adult at the time of baptism. – This could be our Mary Sparks b 1803 that married Peter Jr. Drost in 1866. This date would indicated Mary was 63 when she married Peter Drost, likely then this is Mary’s second marriage.

Daniel remarried 1809 his 2nd Wife – Hannah b 1788 d Dec. 4 1860- settled in Gagetown. Of note if the dates are right, Daniel married his second wife the year before his first wife died.
Only child verified in the records as theirs - Judah baptized on Dec 6 1815 – Gagetown -

The Esther Clark Wright book Loyalists of NB, Daniel is simply listed only as "being from Queen's County". There is no reference to him being a UEL as yet. He surfaces twice in the land petitions of that time. In July 1802 (age 34), he is stated to be "from Wickham, Queens Co., ..... to have cleared 12 acres of land that was originally granted to Richard Todd. Seven of the 12 acres which were now in Winter grain and Summer grain and about one acre in corn and potatoes. " Microfilm - F1042
In July 1807 there is another petition concerning this same land he aquired three years earlier. This time he sold the land to Thomas Cory where he (Thomas) built and resided on the land and had a crop of 11 acres of wheat. He came into "possession of it about three years ago, purchasing the ? of a small improvement from one Daniel Sparks." Microfilm - F4171
Notes on William Fairweather – He was b 1809 – In Queens Co., NB s/o Benjamin Fairweather b 1762 in Norwalk, Fairfield, Conn. & Martha Beardsley b 1765 in New York State

In First Families on the Drost family there is listed the following Sparks:

Elizabeth Sparks b 1783 m 27 Feb. 1806 at Gagetown, Queens Co., Richard Drost b 1783 in NB d 1857. They first settled in Gagetown then Wicklow Parish, Carlton Co., and had seven children. Wicklow is next to Kent Parish, next to the southern border of Victoria Co.

Mary Sparks b 1803 in NB m 1866 Peter Jr. Drost b 1790 in NB d after 1857. They first settled in Jemseg then moved to Wicklow Parish like his brother Richard and had seven children as well.

Jane Sparks b 1815 in Queens Co., m James William Drost b 1800. They settled in White Cove, Cambridge Parish, and Queens and had 12 children.

There is 32 yrs b/t Elizabeth and Jane. There is a possibility that Elizabeth is a sister to the original Daniel b 1769 and Jane and Mary are a possible daughter or nieces. This then suggests that there is another generation of Sparks or they came as siblings.

The parents of these three brothers were Peter Drost b? d after Nov 4 1815 m to Mary b? d after 1815. Peter and Mary Drost first came to NB in 1783 as UEL and settled in Saint John then Jemseg, Cambridge Parish, Queens Co.

Of note- Gagetown and Maugerville were the first English settlements along the Saint John River above the city of Saint John. The two settlements were founded by Cap. Francis Peabody of Mass., a distinguished Colonial.

3. David – b 1832, in Sheffield, d Mar 14 1901, Bristol – in the 1861 census, he is listed as married to Mary Jane Dross? m Apr. 28 1851 wit. Arthur M Taylor and William C Burpee with a dau. Melissa b 1858 – There is a David and Mary Sparks listed as Wit. to the marriage of Daniel and Eleanor in 1849 – David would have been only 17 years old.
Further notes on David – Not confirmed but this could be the David listed in the 1871 census in Parish of Kent, Carleton Co., as his birth dates match- David age 39 (1932) m to Annie (not Mary Jane) age 30 (1841) with children: _ _ _ vie age 12 ( 1859), Sarah age 8 (1863), Helen age 1 (1870) In the 1881 Census for Peel Parish in Carleton Co., David is listed as age 48 (born 1833) wife Annie age 46, b 1835, and daughter Hellen age 11, b 1870 and John age 10, b 1871.

6. Martha J – b 1842, in Sheffield – still living in household in 1861 & 1871. In 1881 there is a Martha age 36 (1845) living in the household of Charlotte Fulton age 46, probably a widow, and her children: Elizabeth, James, George.

7. Robert – b 1843, in Sheffield d 1898 at Bath m Easter b 1840
Their children: As listed in the 1881 Census in Sheffield
1.Margaret b 1858

5. Marion – b 1889
6.Hester – b 1890

8. Elizabeth – b 1851, in Sheffield - Additional note: She is not listed in the 1861 census – likely died. Likely a granddaughter as Margaret is now 57 years old.

9. George O – b 1854 – Still living in household in 1871 – Likely a grandson.
Further Notes on George: There is a George Sparks listed in the 1881 census in Kent Parish, Carleton Co., age 27 (1854) m Lydian age 26 (1853) – children Nora M age 3 (1878) / Alice M age 3 (1878) and Elmira E b July 1880

Also on pg 17 for the Parish of Sheffield in the 1851 census - Likely but not confirmed, a son of Robert and Margaret, is our

Daniel – Head b 1822 age 29, in Sheffield
Eleanor Walker – Wife b 1826 age 25 – Irish origin. Apparently arrived 6 years earlier, age 19 from Ireland in 1845
Thomas W – b 1848 age 3 in Sheffield
Elizabeth J – b 1851 age months in Sheffield

Rational for Daniel being the first son of Robert and Margaret: Daniel was born a year after Robert & Margaret were married 1821 and 4 years before Daniel and Mary A were married in 1826. Robert’s bother Daniel and Mary were not married until 1826, after Daniel’s birth.

Living in the next household pg 17 # 28 was:

Daniel Sparks– Head b 1797 in NB d sometime before 1871, was living in Kingston (not sure which Kingston this is) before moving to Sheffield– Listed as a Mechanic.
Married Aug. 10 1826 in Sheffield Parish, Mary A Hanselpacker – b 1804 in Sheffield (22 years old when she married) d/o Phillip Hanselbekker b 1750 Bergen Co., New Jersey d Nov 11 1819 Sheffield Parish and Margretha ?
Phillip Hanselbekker is the s/o Johannis Henselbekker. Mary A. m apparently 2nd to Gabriel Van Horne.

Daniel and Mary A. ………Children:

Catherine – b 1835 in Sheffield
James – b 1838 in Sheffield
Margaret – b 1841 in Sheffield
Jacob – b 1843 in Sheffield
Peter – b 1843 in Sheffield
Elizabeth – b 1848 in Sheffield

Sometime before 1861 Daniel and family moved to Kent Parish, Carleton Co.

In the 1861 census for Kent Parish, Daniel is listed as age 66 with wife Mary age 60.

In 1871 census Kent Parish - Daniel has died; listed there is Mary age 68, Jacob age 30, Peter age 27, Elizabeth age 23, and John age 20. Listed is Mary Jane Drost married Abram Sparks and then Aaron Sparkes. Source – Meseidy Valentin Vazquez. Notes-
In the 1881 Census, Kent Parish – Mary is listed as age 80, living with her are Jacob age 41, Peter age 37, Elizabeth age 32, John age 29 and Mary a granddaughter born in Aug 1880.

In the 1861 census - living in Sheffield there is a

Daniel b 1834 age 27 m to Susanna b 1831 age 30. He is possibly a son of Daniel and Mary A. This Daniel wasn’t listed in the 1851 census; he then would have been 17 in 1851
Their children:
Rebecca J – b 1853 age 8
Moses M – b 1855 age
Levi A – b 1857
Ellen E – b 1859
