I just found this posting from 2005 and hope that someone can help us in finding our lost relative. My 3rd GreatGrandmother was Cynthia Bishop b. 1797 to 1802 in Canada. We assume that her parents were UEL as they were both born in Conn. Until just recently when a Death Cert for one of her children turned up with her madien name we had no idea who she was.
There is a possibility that the brother of Napthali Bishop, John Bishop who died 1801 might be her Father if his wife Ester Andrews Bishop was with child at the time of his Death. She may have remarried, possibly to a Abel/Abiel Cheney.
Cynthia married abt 1817 Duncan Grant (again we know nothing about him either). They had the following children in Canada, James 1817, John 1821,Clarissa 1823, Freeman 1828(my 2nd GreatGrandfather), Allen, Ira 1830, Rufus 1832, Erastus 1834, Emily 1836, Merilla/Marilla 1838 and William 1840. The family moved to PA, US in 1841, where Aaron 1843, Allison 1843 and David 1844 were born. Duncan died in 1860 in PA and Cynthia died around 1880 in Pa.
We have a Brick wall with both Duncan and Cynthia, I'm hoping someone can help us.
Just as a note, John Bishop was not a UEL, he served in the American forces, was capured and sent to Quebec, after he was released he returned to the US. Some time later he returned to Quebec to visit friends he had made, decided to stay and was granted land. He brought his family in 1800 where his Brother Napthali joined him. They were a part of the founding of Dudswell, One-fourth of the Township was granted to the heirs of John Bishop and Napthali Bishop and eight other men.
Two other brothers Samuel and Elijah Bishop did not follow them to Canada, remained in NY.
My Bishop line comes from another family from RI and my Gordon line came to America from Scotland. Any help would be of great benifit. Lyle D. Bishop III
