Hi Ginette, The cemetery index is a reconstruction based on visual examination of inscribed stone, error can exist at each stage: in clerical computation of age, with the stonecutter's understanding and skill, with our limited interpretation of textual data. Murdock Harper was listed in the Spring of 1861 as a single man, age 29; Susan may be listed at New Bandon Parish in the same census. After that census, Murdock Harper of Miscou married Susan Jennings of Janeville, as to their issue, we know the names of at least six daughters and a son born in the space of a dozen years 1863-1875. Edwin Bollang of Tangier, NS, married Susan, certainly Harper's widow, 2 Oct. 1884. Susan died August 1888, age 49. If the widow would have remarried at least one year after his death, the year of death could be 1883. Harper could have died earlier (the last child known was born about 1875, but, we have an incomplete record for births). As to the transcription data for Murdock Harper, Harper could have died 29 Jan. 1878 -age 48, or 29 Jan. 1883 -age 53, both dates suggest 1830 as year of birth. Our PANB transcriber reporter possibly misread the number "3" as "8", which happens with deteriorated stonework. The more likley date then seems clearly to be 29 Jan. 1883 -age 53, with Susan, a widow with small children, remarrying an able seaman, some twenty-one months later. This explanation seems simplest. Can some one in Miscou take a good quality photograph of the stone which can be scanned for detailed examination? Aldo
