The first of the William John Brown family of settlers arrived in Manitoba in 1877 or 1878. Oldest son Richard shows up on the 1881 census (Dufferin) at age 26 with his wife Bethia and son Fredrick Evans. They arrived in Manitoba by paddlewheeler on the Red River as the CPR railway had not yet been built. By 1882 the Dufferin land records show W.J. Brown and family own two quarter sections of land (each quarter equals 160 acres). His son Richard and family own two quarters and another son, Tom, owns one quarter. Shorly after that another quarter is purchased from the Hudson Bay Company by Henry Arthur Brown in 1890. I have the original document. Eventually that quarter will change ownership and become home for another son James Weir Brown and family.
